Mastectomy

Hi there

I’m 6 cycles into my Stage 2 cancer journey. Just finished Pertuzamab and continuing with Herceptin and Letrozole. No chemo I’m due to have a single mastectomy in early March in the day surgery unit at my local hospital. As it gets nearer I’m becoming more anxious mainly about the drains and my inability to find a decent bra post op. I’m a 40 G and it’s so difficult to find anything that’s suitable. Does anyone have experience with this?

Many thanks

    Hi Profolly,

I'm just new to this forum. I was diagnosed with male breast cancer so won't be able to offer advice about decent bra post op but I had a mastectomy just before Christmas. I too was worried about drains but you will get used to it/them after a few hours or day or so. You might be a bit uncomfortable sleeping , especially if you lie on that side but pain killers will help. My main concern was that I would accidentally rip it out but once it was removed and I saw how it was actually attached there was no likelihood of this happening.

As for the surgery itself, mine went well and after few days rest, I was able to move about and get out for some fresh air. Give yourself a few days with plenty of rest and you should be fine.

I know my case and yours are different but I hope this helps in some way.

    Take care!

    S Mc

Thanks so much for your reassurance

  • Hi everyone I am 59 years old as of Wednesday was diagnosed middle of September with lobular invasive 60mm grade 2 ER+estrogen receptive positive. On the 4th December I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction was in hospital for 1 Day was really worried about the drain but once I was showed how to drain and empty the drain it was really easy to do but must admit was glad when it came out a week later. My wounds have healed really well only took pain killers for the first 2 weeks but I do the excercises every day and can use my arm to do anything now. My back is still quite numb it will just take time to thaw out as I call it. My new boob is the envy of any 18 year old but the other one well that’s another matter. My journey now has been a lot of waiting about I entered into the Optima trial but unfortunately I have to have 6 rounds chemo which I had my first round on 12th February (Red Devil) feeling well but I am under no illusion that they will all be the same. I have chemo every 3 weeks. I hadn’t felt a lump but just above the nipple my boob was indented but it wasn’t all the time it would come and go but so glad I went and got it checked.  It’s scary and finding it difficult to sleep at night but I’m determined to come out the other side I’ve got a new grandson due in April and hopefully will be able to give him a cuddle. Take care everyone this is a great forum with lots of help.
