Hi. My mother 81 has had a mastectomy back in May 2020 but still has a seroma which has recently got infected and she is on her 2nd lot of antibiotics. I am so worried about her as she has been in pain for months and there seems no end to it.

She is back and fore clinic every other day for draining but it just swells back up like a hard lump and now it’s infected.

Has anyone else experienced this?

thank you

I had the same problem with regular drainage and even ultrasound to try to get it all. Also several courses of antibiotics but it did clear eventually

  • Hi

Welcome to the community and sorry to hear about your mum. I can completely understand that it feels never-ending - and feels a bit unfair to be in pain and ill once the tumour has been removed. I had an infection in a seroma, too. Unfortunately although it's not that common, it does happen. The problem is that the seroma is a little pool of fluid with no blood vessels or tissue in it so it's harder for the antibiotics to have an effect and can take quite a while for them to completely get rid of it - hence the constant draining. It can take a while, but they'll get rid of it eventually and your mum will start to feel better.

Sending you some virtual hugs, because I know it's difficult to be watching your mum go through this.
