hi everyone, I'm new here and have just seen my consultant yesterday, who has said that I'm going to need a mastectomy and to think about breast reconstruction but I've heard scare stories about the silicon implants and just wondered if anyone could help/advise about this please.

  • Hi welcome to the community ...sorry can't answer the question about implants I chose no reconstruction and use prosthesis .if you go onto the other threads like treatment and diagnosis you may find someone who has made this decision or not depending on their research .

Whatever you decide now you a member on here keep posting letting us know what you have decided and how you are doing . Lots of support from people who understand the rollercoaster you've landed on .

    Keep posting

  • Hi

A warm welcome to the community though sorry you are here.

Like Northerner, I didn't have reconstruction so can't offer any guidance about it. Here is a link to the Macmillan information page about it in case that is of help.

I think that you are probably more interested in personal experience though. If you go to the search bar at the top of the page and type in "silicon implants" it will bring up a few previous discussions you could take a look at.

Implants aren't the only option for reconstruction - they can also use your own tissue from various places to make you a new breast. It's likely they'll arrange for you to speak to a plastic surgeon at some point who can advise on the options that are best for you. Ironically it was the plastic surgeon who convinced me I didn't want reconstruction - I had fairly large breasts and the options didn't appeal to me.

It's a massive decision for each of us to make - and at a time when we are in shock and exhausted. I think it can be helpful to remember that the choice is yours - different things are right for different people; that nothing has to be permanent - implants can be removed or put in further down the line; and to trust your instincts.

Hopefully someone with reconstruction experience will be along soon to give you some more information
