Hi, I found out 4 weeks ago that I have cancer in both breasts and am having a double mastectomy and reconstruction using my stomach fat on Monday. My breast care nurse said I would be in hospital for 5 days and that I should get a sport’s bra with a zip at the front but is there anything else/clothes I should bring for comfort? Thanks
Hi Stella77 I'm new here and haven't had my surgery yet but I've been told
-little heart shaped pillows that go under your arms for comfort after surgery (I ordered mine from cancerresearchuk.org) they might have these at the hospital or try amazon as might be faster
- v shaped pillow for sleeping
- front fastening tops,
- a robe
Good luck with your surgery
Hi and a warm welcome to the forum. Agree about front fastening tops - you won’t want to be trying to put anything on (or off) over your head. Loose bottoms too (sounds slightly dodgy!) eg leggings, tracksuit bottoms, easy to pull on and off.
Wishing you well, good luck with your surgery and keep posting questions as you think of them. No questions silly here, just the ones you don’t ask!
Sending love and a big virtual hug, HFxx
That’s great thanks. Good luck with your surgery too
Hi
I had just the one 4 weeks ago I'd add to the list comfy and front fastening PJs (good if a little on the large side so no pressure on abdomen), slippers (they'll have you walking/doing stairs before you leave), lipsalve, water bottle (important to stay hydrated - aids recovery), some snacks, oversize leggings for going home in (and large or front fastening clothes), facial wipes, phone recharge lead that's really long (I got one that was 3 meters, ideal) and a note book and pen to write down all the information you're given/questions to ask physio/consultant/nurses etc.
I'd get 2 bra's so you can wear one whilst the others in the wash. I was also recommended to get just below boob height support pants and wear for 4 weeks day & night and (maybe) as a result have no swelling. Scars all looking very good, just need energy levels to catch up.
I took too much stuff that I didn't need but the above was invaluable.
Good luck and recovery
Sam
That's great Sam. Thanks very much. I'm known for being pretty daft and positive so fingers crossed! Great to hear your scars are looking very good and hope you start to feel more energetic soon. Take Care, Estelle.
