Hi, my name is Kym. I was diagnosed on New Years Eve with breast cancer. I have 2 suspicious places and due to have a core biopsy on the other site. I have an infection from the first biopsy so I can't have core biopsy until that has healed.
I have no idea what to expect, I am scared, it all seems such a shock.
Can someone tell me what a core biopsy is like please.
Hi Kym, so sorry you are going through this. I had a core biopsy in October, I felt no pain as they numbed the area first They took about 5 samples, I find it best not to look so I do not know what they are doing. The area was fine afterwards just a bit sore for a coupe of days. I hope you are OK. sending Hugs.
Hi
A warm welcome to the online community - though not really somewhere you'd choose to be. Sorry to hear about your infection - hope it's not too painful and clears up quickly.
I understand you feeling scared and in shock - it's a massive thing to deal with and takes time to sink in. Firstly, it's important to remember that outcomes for breast cancer are very good and getting better all the time. Treatments improve all the time and while it's certainly not a breeze, it's very do-able and you will get through it, one day at a time.
The core biopsy is quite straightforward. As Netax2 said, they inject a local anaesthetic first and then use a needle to extract tiny bits of tissue to examine. It can be a little noisy, but shouldn't hurt at all. There's some information on different breast biopsies here.
This is a (sadly) large and busy group and you'll find we are good for support, jokes, virtual hugs, whatever you need!
Hope that infection clears up soon!
