Hi ladies,

ive not had a diagnosis, I’m worried sick, I found a lump in my breast 3 weeks ago, went to the Drs 2 weeks ago and was referred to the breast clinic, I have just come back from my appointment at the loveliest and friendliest clinic x the nurse practitioner could feel my lump and sent me for an ultrasound scan, I’m 38 so a mammogram is not suitable for me, I had the ultrasound and the gentleman performing the scan could not find a lump and said it was just my breast tissue, there is defiantly a large mass in my breast, so I was shocked he couldn’t find anything, also very relieved, he sent me out to go and get my results with the nurse practitioner, she entered the room an you could tell she didn’t look happy with the result he had give and really didn’t want me to leave without seeing the consultant, the consultant who was very lovely and reassuring examined my breast and noted the large mass, I asked if it could be a cyst and she said it was definitely not a cyst and wanted to do a fine needle aspiration, this was done and I now need to wait for the results, she also said if nothing shows up from the results she would like to monitor me and an appointment has been made for 6 weeks.

so my question really is, has anyone experienced a lump that was clearly palpable but didn’t show on the ultrasound? The lump is quite deep in the my breast near my armpit side x

I am trying my hardest not to worry, but I have a sinking feeling that I’m not going to get good news x

  • .....hello.

This is certainly a worrying time for you. I'm not medical so I have no idea what might be happening but if the nurse and consultant can feel something, it is much better they are investigating it by taking the biopsy. I had heard that younger breasts can be dense and the tumours don't always show out on the mammogram and I believe that ultra sound doesn't always show up problems......an obese friend having an ovarian examination was told that the tissue was too dense to see through.......So perhaps the density of your breast prevented the ultra sound too.

However, for you at this moment the really important thing is that the investigation is continuing. Most breast cancers are sucessfully treated but they need to be found and analysed before the treatment can begin. I know the waiting for these results will be the longest wait but once you have a plan. ....or it turns out to be something benign....you will find it much easier. You are not alone either. There was someone starting a new thread during last night who was in exactly your position.

Try not to google information. It can be very out of date and misleading. Ask all the questions you like on this site....usually someone will have had some similar experience or simply express your feelings....someone will be around to listen.

I expect it will be about 10 days before you have definite news. Try to distract yourself if you can. There are some threads here which are more chatty.and often make you laugh..Awake, Walking back to Happiness( beautiful photos), the story line.....

Keep in touch. I know you will worry but try to remember that many of people posting here have finished treatment and no longer have cancer. The treatment may be unpleasant at times but it does finish and removing a cancer is better than keeping an undiagnosed lump.

    Take care. Love Karen

  • Hello, glad you have found the site.lots of support available. I've been using the site for a year now and I do remember seeing posts from ladies who had lumps they couldn't see on scans etc some of which turned out to be benign. This is the most scary time waiting to find out if there is a problem ,you did the right thing getting it seem straight away. Even if it is cancer there are lots of different types and very good treatments. Fingers crossed for you and keep posting if you need support xxx

  • Hi , Just wanted to say that you definitely did the right thing consulting your gp and going to the clinic. The waiting for results is a real pain and something that has to be endured , but hopefully the news will be good for you .Try some of the other threads on here as suggested by - I found them a very good distraction when waiting for my results earlier this year.Sending you big hugs and be kind to yourself. xx

Thank you for such a lovely response, it’s the hardest 3 weeks I’ve had not knowing, I went from working so bad, to being told at ultrasound nothing to worry about (sigh of relief) to then being put back to worrying and wondering, I’ve had a gut feeling from the moment I felt it x

    Hi ,

You definitely did the right thing by going to the GP. I am 35 and noticed changes in my breast. I was advised similar to you at my referral that due to my age my breast are dense so they asked if they could use a dye when doing the mammogram as they said it would help them to be able to see any changes. I do have small breasts so that could have been the reason I was given this option. Depending on how your results go it may be worth asking if you can have a mammogram with the dye. Hope your results are positive.

    Sending hugs xx

Hi , I am only a 34B cup so i guess it was easier for them. I wish I could say that they didn’t find anything but unfortunately I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery early August.  I was told on the day that I had my mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy that it was cancer and just had to wait for my results. I know it’s easier said then done but please try not to worry until you get your results back. I have known others on similar situations and it turned out to be nothing to worry about. Be kind to yourself and know that we are here to support you if you need to talk. The main thing is that you have had it looked at. Always here if you need anything. Sending love and positivity your way xx
