Chemotherapy side effects

I’ve just had my 2nd chemotherapy treatment of EC the first one I wasn’t well at all, had sickness, diarrhoea, what I thought was ulcers in my mouth the day after but turns out I had passed out and bit my tongue, I remember coming round on the living room floor but thought I had just lay down, fallen asleep. My appetite was off for a week. This time I felt ok just a bit dizzy later on, I had gone to the toilet early hours come around at the top of the stairs, had bit my tongue as same massive ulcer at the side. I was very confused, had wet myself, didn’t know what was going on according to my daughter. My theory is the chemotherapy is causing me to have seizures. I was hospitalised for 3 days, I did mention the things that happen every time I have chemo treatment and nothing like this happens any other time. I’ve been put on anti epileptic drugs while I carry on the treatment and I’m hoping I don’t have anymore episodes. Has anyone else had these sort of side effects? I know seizures can happen due to dehydration and low sodium levels in your body. What I can’t understand is I had plenty of fluids throughout the day and had electrolytes so what could be the problem? I’m very worried about my next one now.

  • Hi

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I didn't have the sort of side effects you're experiencing when I had EC, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi  , this does sound very scary, I assume you’ve let your team know and that they are investigating the reasons behind all this? I guess so since you said you’d been put into anti-seizure meds?

I hope they can help by maybe changing dose rate of the chemo or more close monitoring of your blood levels. Have they maybe thought about an urgent EEG? (Brain wave scan) Maybe you might ask if you could be admitted for the first night or so following chemo session?

Hope the mouth ulcers don’t give you too much trouble, I know how painful they can be, do ask for a special mouthwash (non alcohol-based) to help.
