Scar healing

I had lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed just over 3 weeks ago. The lumpectomy scar is healing really well but the scar where lymph nodes were removed not so well. Half the scar looks good, the other half is a bit red. It's also still a bit painful. I had oncology appointment last week and they said not to worry, the scar at armpit takes longer to heal, mostly because of where it is. I know everyone is different but wondered how long others took to heal?

  • Hi, I had a lumpectomy  and the wound seemed to  heal really quickly, also had an lymph node clearance and that has taken a bit longer to heal, I'm week 5 post op for my lymph node clearance and I feel this is the first week I can see a notable difference, it's not so red and I'm more comfortable when wearing a bra.

  • Hi Elorac

Thank you so much! I'm just not sure what to expect. My armpit is still quite numb and the inside of the top of my arm is tender. I know they said healing takes 6-8 weeks but I just don't want anything to delay the radiotherapy which I'm due to start towards end March.

I'm.still wearing post-op bras which are so comfy but I've noticed tonight that the seam under my arm is exactly where my scar is which might not be helping. Xx

  • Hi Heatherlassie, my daughter's lymph node scar was more sore and took much longer to heal than her lumpectomy one did. She spoke to her CNS nurse and oncologist about it but they weren't worried and it did heal eventually.

Best of luck with your ongoing treatment. x

  • Hi Heather my bra was the same I used a small cotten square tucked into my bra which covered the seam, which helped.  I had my first visit at radiotherapy today where I had a cat scan before  sessions begin on 17th March. My armpit is still numb but that dosn't seem to be a problem regarding the radiotherapy. X

  • Hi Elorac

Ah that's good to know. I hope all goes well with your radiotherapy.

Good idea about the cotton square in your bra. I'll maybe try that too.

    Thanks again. Xx

  • Hi Cherry2

Thank you - that's good to hear that your daughter's wound did heal. I'm not a very patient person so maybe just expecting too much. Blush xx
