Reaction to surgical glue

Hi all, I'm now 2 weeks post a bilateral mastectomy without reconstruction. My wound was sealed with surgical glue and seems to be healing well. However, I have sensitive skin and have had a reaction to the glue, causing a flaky and very itchy rash. Has anyone else experienced this and got any tips...I know I can't, but all I want to do is scratch it to get some relief and Piriton isnt doing anything!

Secondly, my skin on my chest and shoulders has suddenly gone very sensitive to fabrics; its almost a painful sensation when the fabric im wearing touches it...is the normal?

Many thanks and apologies for the long message Blush

  • Hi

I had an allergic reaction to something after my bilateral surgery. I started with itchy flaky skin around the wounds which then spread and turned into an all over body rash. I tried antihistamine and hydrocortisone cream (must not use on wound!) but ended up on a week of steroids to get rid of the reaction.
I would call your BCN or GP to get it looked at just in case!  X

  • Thanks for your reply...I'll definitely call my BCN x

  • Ask about a spray.....no idea of it's name....but my OH is Type 1 diabetic and is allergic to the glue on his sensors. He sprays his skin first which prevents the reaction. I'm sure it would help you and the pharmacies must surely recognise it. Unfortunately we are not at home so I can't check out what it's called.

    Hope it's sorted soon.

  • Is it the glue ? I had lumpectomy and I reacted to the Mepore dressing . Had to use hydrocortisone cream , delayed my radiotherapy .

  • Thanks for your reply. I didn't have any dressings, but did have a similar reaction to the plasters on my drains, but that went as soon as they were removed x

  • It’s a nightmare, isn’t it ? I’d call BCN and ask to see dermatologist .

  • Good advice, thanks x

  • Really good replies. I think it’s a very important side effect of surgery which needs attention. I’m already nervous about the discomfort following my op in a week’s time. Apparently surgeons are v particular about their dressing style. From my experience the priority for them is to make sure the wound isn’t infected, hugely important I agree. However, wouldn’t it make for the best surgeon to practice personal centred care, so our quality of life needn’t be compromised post op?
