Hi everyone, I have recently had a masectomy due to a breast cancer diagnosis. I am HER2 positive and ready to start treatment. I have also got a heart condition which is making the decision to start trastuzumab a little harder although I have been given the ok to start it and been assured they will keep a close eye on me  Just wondering if anyone else is in my position and how they are coping with this particular treatment, thank you

  • Hi Sara, sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I too am HER2 positive.  I was diagnosed 6 years ago and after chemo and right mastectomy I began with trastuzumab and Pertuzumab which I still have every 3 weeks.    I have regular heart scans and up to now they have all been fine.   The side effects I have are severe itching and neuropathy in my hands and feet.  This has gradually got worse over the last 6 months and is worrying if I’m honest as I don’t want it to get any worse.  I also suffer with tiredness but I’ve been on treatment for a long time now.

I had a lumpectomy myself, but also HER2+ and I had chemo and phesgo.   I had 6 cycles, one every 3 weeks and whilst it was tough, it was bearable.   I walked a lot, every day, and that helped and I kept busy to ensure I was distracted. I blogged throughout my treatment and you might find this one helpful. Chemo Blog post   Best wishes

  • Thank you for that , I have been offered chemo and trastuzumab but have to make a decision on whether to have the treatment or not as the treatment can cause problems to my heart (already had a heart attack 7 years ago)
