Hi, Does anyone know what you can do or take to ease the intense itching after breast surgery?

I have a 2nd surgery next week and would like to be more prepared this time. It was horrendous first time  worse than the pain, but no-one would give me any advice (pharmacist, Dr, 111).

I know it's a good thing and as a result of everything trying to knit back together but I found it unbearable.

Thank you Slight smile

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. Fortunately for me, I didn't experience the itching you describe after my lumpectomy but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Beetsy, I had terrible itching too. I feel for you.  There are varying opinions as to what it might be. Irritation to the dressing seems to be a popular reason. Last reason made sense to me. Surgeon said it was a result of moisture around the wound. He advised wearing nothing on top as much as possible to keep dry. Was also given Demol 500 which you can use to wash with or apply as a lotion. This eased it a little. You can get this from the pharmacist.  Wishing you all the very best. It will go away. X

  • Thank you so much, I'll look that out.  Really appreciate your helpSlight smile
