Hello, I am new here.
Firstly i would like to send big hugs and well wishes to all you brave warriors.
Since December I have been living in what can only be described as hell. I received a recall following routine mammogram. A biopsy, an MRI and a further biopsy later. I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. Grade 2 Invasive Ductal carcinoma. This week I had my surgery and sentinel Node biopsy. (This experience is another story). I was told to wear non wired bras at d8agnosis appointment. However... my incision under my arm is where the top of the bra sits and I have an incision under the breast where my bra begins. What do I wear as means of support? The location of incision was never discussed so I didn't know what to expect. I Just though it would be at the side of the breast. I had a posterior tumor which was low down. That is all I was told. Surely I can't wear a bra which will be very sore and will irritate the wounds. I have had glue rather than stitches.
Everything has happened soo quickly I am still trying to absorb amd come to terms of the reality of the last 4/5 weeks. (This experience is another story too). Knowing what would be suitable to wear was never considered.
I am 3 days post op. I had day surgery and discharged after 2 hours. I havent spoken to anybody medical to ask.
Hoping you can help. Best wishes and heart felt gratitude for any support xxx
Hi, so sorry to hear you've had to join the club, I had my surgery on 19th December and my scar is from armpit to the bottom of my right breast - about 10" in length. I bought special post surgery bras but, to be honest, haven't worn them much as I've found a soft sports bra was more comfortable - you might find them useful? Or maybe just a soft piece of gauze tucked under your bra, over the stitches.
My diagnosis is similar to yours although, unfortunately a little further advanced as it's grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma and I had to have 36 nodes removed. The past few months have been a bit of a nightmare, I had a screening mammogram in April that came back as ok, no problems found . I'm currently waiting for an appointment with the oncologist, the waiting is the worst bit for sure.
I hope you find a bra that is comfortable for you and lots of support among this community too - good luck x
Hi Mrs Cor10
My diagnosis was similar to yours and it sounds as if the incisions are in the same place. There are some excellent crop top style bras from Primark (£8, slightly padded which feel protective and are supportive, not the ribbed cheaper ones). These were great and I still occasionally wear them now and there’s lots of style of knickers that go with them. I had a couple of the cheaper front fastening bras but in my opinion they do little apart from cover up so I wore for sleeping for a couple of weeks then abandoned. A proper sports bra was best as this applied enough pressure to ease swelling and felt comfortable and protective.
I remember thinking I wouldn’t be able to wear a normal bra again but actually it’s about having time to heal. Once the incisions have healed you may find things are and feel differently so I would hold off buying loads until you know. I was back in my usual underwire bras by the time I went for my surgery results after a month with no issues which would have been unimaginable when I was only a few days post surgery.
Hope your recovery goes well and you find something which suits you. x
