As my child’s mind is engaged as I wait for cancer confirmation, my child’s mind is wondering a ‘stupid’ question… Can the same breast with multiple tumours be different cancers eg. A tumour hr&er positive with a different tumour triple negative?

  • Hello, I think that for an informed answer, it might be worth you talking to the lovely and very professional / knowledgeable MacMillan advisors on 0808 808 0000 who are medically qualified to answer your question.

From my limited knowledge, there are such things as multi focal and multi centric tumours. I believe that the latter type can be different grades etc, but that they are not common.

  • I was diagnosed in Aug 24 with multi focal invasive BC with 3 small tumours in same breast. No lymph nide involvement was apparent so i had a SMX with sentinel lymph node biopsies (3 nodes taken) Initially results showed my cancer was er+/pr+/her2- so not aggressive. Fast forward a few weeks and was told 1 lymph node was positive with an 8mm micromet and extra capsular spread so now had to have 3nd surgery to do axillary lymph node clearance. Palpable level ii nodes were found but level iii clear. Results from this surgery 5 weeks later so only recently showed that 2 of the tumours removed were as previously diagnosed er+/pr+/her- but the 3rd tumour removed was in fact triple positive and had grown from diagnosis to mastectomy in a few weeks from 2.1cm to 4.2cm so doubled in size so now I have been told I have to have chemo + herceptin then radio then hormone treatment.

Since this my surgery wound has broken down and reopened and is infected so back on antibiotics and can't see oncologist to discuss treatment until its healed so I'm terrified that it's growing somewhere in my body while I'm waiting. So I have no tumours as breast and all tissues removed but still microscopic traces of cancer cells Tired face Trust me to get a rare combination of different types of cancer in same breast.

  • I’m really sorry to read this. Like you, the rug was pulled beneath me post my pathology results, but in different way to you. I hope that your infection clears soon. X

  • Thank you so much. Sending you healing hugs too Hugging xx
