Financial implications

Hi. Don't know where to start.  I had in my mind I didn't want radiotherapy. Gone through all pros and cons and pretty much decided.

Spoke to Dr today, she absolutely recommends radiotherapy. Telephone consultation as she couldn't get into hospital today.  I felt like she just threw loads of medical jargon and stats at me.she realy scared me and feel like if I say no to treatment I'm going to die.

If I have radiotherapy would be in a few weeks and would last for 3 weeks.

Aside from the pros and cons medically and mentally I'm worried about money/logistics

I'm a single mum to 2 girls who are high school age.. I rent a property. I receive no child benefit/tax credit/housing benefit.  My salary is my only income.

If I go back to work and then have to take 3 weeks off at a later date will work pay me ? ( they have so far but it is not in my contract to do so, could stop anytime) . Dr suggested working from home, but my job is 9-5 office hours. I would be out to hospital for a good chunk of that.

I would need to drive myself to and from hospital for treatment.  60 mile round trip every day, 5 says a week for 3 weeks.

I can't afford the fuel for that!   I had sorted in my head and now I have no idea what to do.

Any advice ?

Thanks

  • I did 3 weeks radiotherapy 5 days with the weekend off and I got the hospital taxi service it’s free my doctor recommended it as he said I would start to get tired,  sometimes you have to share or wait for pick up which can be a little frustrating but on the positive you don’t have to worry about getting there yourself but r the cost of fuel. I just pack some lunch and took a few books and my treatment flew over.

  • Hi, I asked that and she told me no because I can drive and nhs resources are stretched at the moment ! :(

Rubbish that costs even come into it isn't it.   I thought radiotherapy made you tired but she seemed to have no concerns re driving.

I'd much prefer to do what you did. I'll get stressed finding a parking space. And I'm rubbish parking in tight spaces! X

  • Hi

I'm not sure which part of the country you are in as this seems to have a huge bearing on treatment and support.

I was at Christie's the radiotherapy itself was painless and the three weeks went quickly. I was given a schedule of appointment times but these didn't always go to plan. Some days I was in and out some days I was there a couple of hours.

I was able to drive there and back no problem, the fatigue hit me about two months later. I'm not sure but could you ask for reinbursement? Each trust will have a different policy. I work for a local authority and families whos children are in hospital have been able to claim bus fares, sorry I don't know if that helps.

Could you speak to breast care nurse to see what options are available.

    Take care xx

  • Sorry just googled this

    Claiming a refund
If you must travel to and from hospital for treatment, you may be able to claim a refund under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS). This can cover: your bus or train fares. some petrol costs.

Searc on here as there is a section about transport.

    Good luck xx

  • Thanks,  I will have a look. I'd be going to christies too.

If I  can claim back I'm not sure I could afford to pay it first.

I think I'll try and speak to mcmilloan tomorrow to see if they can help.

Thank you so much for responding x

  • No worries, finances are the last thing we should have to worry about but realistically it's a huge part of the diagnosis.

I had the radiotherapy at Salford Christie, didn't pay for parking they told me to buzz car park attendant and say I'd been to Christie's. Also nearly always able to park in the designated spaces right outside.

Has anyone discussed the McMillan grant. Also a charity called Turn2Us and your local council can sometimes help if they have welfare support. Xx
