Post breast cancer - therapist for navigating life after cancer

I am just over 1 year on from diagnosis, surgery and the start of chemotherapy. I finished chemotherapy in March this year. It's been a tricky few months and I've done my best to be grateful for my survival and moving on. But I'm really struggling and feel I need to speak to someone for emotional support.

Can anyone recommend post cancer therapists? Ideally I would like this weekly for a few months to help me navigate everything. Online therapy sessions would work so location isn't an issue. I am happy to pay.

Really looking for recommendations.

Thank you.

  • Hi

I haven't used them myself, but Macmillan offers, through Bupa, up to 4 free remotely-delivered counselling sessions for people struggling emotionally because they are living with cancer. Clicking here will provide you with more information.

  • Thank you so much   I will check that out Pray

  • I tried the Macmillan but I just didn’t get anything out of it . Some have but mine was a trainee counsellor and I just felt she didn’t give me anything to work with.

. I have BUPA cover , so I’ve been seeing a counsellor . I do prefer face to face . I randomly picked one who seemed most qualified . She has been great .

The main thing she comes back to is that , following a cancer diagnosis , we only have so much capacity ( she demonstrates this with her pen! ) and that it’s important that the things that give energy don’t get pushed to one side .

Ive found it really helpful just to speak to someone independent . I think I’m going to carry on , even when I’ve used up my BUPA sessions .

    Good luck x

  • Thank you  that’s really useful. I’m looking into BUPA. Also some private therapists too.
I know that it’s not a good idea to make any major changes for a year following any kind of major life event but I just feel in a bit of a weird messy hole and need some help getting out and finding a direction that I really want to take.
energy is low tho, and winter with dark days and nights really doesn’t help!
    anyway, onwards Muscle xx

  • Have you tried the moving forward course with Breast cancer Now. I thought it was great. It’s two sessions online or in person

And there’s “someone like me” I think it’s called

might be useful while you wait for  counsellor

    best of luck

  • Hi

I finished chemo in May and felt I was going off my rocker so needed someone to help. I now have sessions with the Oncology Counselling service which has saved me. I had to wait many months for it but its worth a try - maybe the breast cancer nurse can refer you.

I went to a Moving Forward course but it wasn't that great for me although others have a better experience. I tried Future Dreams and their online or in person courses and can't speak of them highly them enough. Might be worth a look? xx

  • Hi, have you got a Maggie's Centre locally? They offer counselling support. Otherwise, it might be worth asking your breast cancer nurse for recommendations. Xx

  • Strangely enough I’ve been to a Breast Cancer Support Group today and the nurse has offered to arrange some counselling for me which I have accepted gratefully.

I am 15 months post diagnosis and February 24, my treatment was completed. It’s now starting to hit me and I need to talk about how I feel with someone who is not my husband, mum or friend.

I completely understand how you are feeling x

  •   thank you I have now booked on a moving Forward online course for February.

  • Thank you  I will check out Future Dreams.
