Reaching after mastectomy

Hello, this is a very minor issue compared to most of the discussions on this site. I’m having a single mastectomy without reconstruction this week. I know movement on the affected side will be restricted after and there are the exercises to do but have others found they were able to still use their unaffected arm for light lifting/reaching? E.g. getting an individual cup or plate from a cupboard…. or a packet of chocolate biscuits. Thank you!

  • Hi BF1 welcome to the forum..There should be no reason that you are not able to used the unaffected arm etc. It may feel like a pull on the chest area when you do but take it easy and don't be lifting heavy items. X

  • Hello

i I had a mastectomy with tissue expander fitted.
I was told not to lift my arm above shoulder level, then not to lift anything above 1 lb or do anything repetitive.
The only thing that was tricky was remembering my limitations and resisting the urge to run before I could walk.

you will be fine I’m sure.

    sending hugs x

  • For anyone else wondering about this, I had my op yesterday and have near full use of my unaffected arm- wouldn’t want to put too much force though it in case it affected my other side. Pleasantly surprised by the extent to which I am able to use my arm on the affected side, e.g. holding cups of tea, eating and typing on my phone.
