Does anyone know if its OK to use topical estrogen cream  for menopause after having triple negative breast cancer. My oncologist has said no to anything estrogen based but my gp is saying different.I keep getting frequent uti infections and it's starting to get to me now.If anybody that's maybe in the same situation and is using the cream, I'd love to hear how you feel using it and has it helped and also what your oncologist said about it?

  • Hi  , your GP is correct. I had oestrogen and progesterone positive breast cancer, and have used vaginal oestrogen cream for 15 years , with the blessing of my onco and surgeon. Very little is absorbed so it is safe.

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • Hi

I’m triple negative (TNBC)  too. I have continued HRT, including vaginal oestrogen all through my treatment. My gynaecologist supported me. When I was diagnosed the first thing my oncologist said was to stop HRT. My husband challenged him, asking here is the evidence that it had any relationship to TNBC (I would have challenged too but I was too overwhelmed and shocked to do it), and he conceded that he only said it because that is what they say to everyone with cancer and there is not only no evidence but it should not be linked in theory. During chemo I kept having UTIs (two of them put me in hospital for a week) and that is when I got prescribed the vaginal oestrogen. I didn't have anymore after I started taking it. My perimenopause was horrific and only HRT worked so I was terrified to go without it. I am happy I stuck to it and at least I had less horrific symptoms to deal with during all the process. I hope my experience helps.

  • Thanks for your reply iryvevenir,my oncologist and breast consultant both said no to Hrt and nothing estrogen based. My gp then said about the topical estrogen cream as it doesn't get absorbed but I read up on it and it does get absorbed but it wouldn't be much. Its good that it's helping you and have a better quality of life.Im on the fence with this but still wanted to hear from other people like yourself for your views so again thanks for replying.

  • I’ve queried this too, my doctors have all said it’s down to quality of life, so I’m continuing with the Vagifem. I gather very little, if any, is absorbed, and it’s a low dose anyway.
