Seroma issues and nerve ending pain

Hi,

I had a mastectomy 6/9. The first week was great and I only needed a few paracetamol to see me through. The drain was removed 6 days after surgery. I was just under 50ml over 2 consecutive days. I was told I'd feel better when the drain was out. I didn't. In fact I felt significantly worse (filling up with liquid and pain) and ended up going to A&E as I was worried something had gone drastically wrong. I have had to be drained pretty much every week. I've also developed nerve ending pain. Lots of other information providers mention 20-30ml before a drain is removed.

I'm currently taking Pregabalin, paracetamol and applying ibuprofen gel, hemp gel and Trameel gel. Trying to get a workable solution isn't easy. I want to go back to work but I can't until I can wear a bra comfortably for any length of time.

I just wanted to hear other people's experiences and solutions for seromas and nerve ending pain. There doesn't seem to be much on the website about this or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Thank you :-)

  • Hi, I had a seroma that delayed my radiotherapy and I still have some swelling and discomfort. I tend to wear non wired bras, which helps a lot generally. I also wear crop style bras at night to give some support whilst sleeping and this does help as well.

I'd suggest you continue to let your medical team know about the level of pain. This could be (I'm no expert) lymphoedema and there are some massage techniques which can help to manage this.  Best wishes

  • Thank you for sharing. I cancelled my drain session last week as I wasn't filling up as much so fingers crossed. People remind me that healing isn't linear as I can get hooked on the progress and then disappointed when there's a step back. I'm speaking to the clinical pharmacist tomorrow to discuss meds.

I agree with you about underwire bras and am a fan of crop top bras! M&S do a great formed cup crop top. I wore it yesterday with my new prosthetic. Had to take it off after 2 hours but that's a first in a few weeks!

  • Hi Claralou.  I had a left mastectomy in April two lymph nodes removed - with no spread thank goodness.  No drains fitted but the swelling kept increasing together with bruising and pain, my GP prescribed oramorph and antibiotics as it was a bank holiday weekend and advised me to contact my consultant.  Was seen on the Tuesday at hospital and found that I had a large hematoma and was back in surgery on the Thursday.  They tell you to expect pain, swelling and bruising so I thought I was just being a wimp !

I still have tenderness discolouration and numbness 5months later but hopefully that will improve with time. If I am only pottering around I still use my post surgery bra’s from Asda online as my prosthesis for the softy that was given fit ok.

if you are concerned about anything contact your breast nurse that’s what they are there for.

    Good luck Xxx

  • Thank you for sharing. it's really helpful to hear other people's stories.. It's so difficult to know what to expect and when to question what's happening.

Good luck to you too! Cx.
