Hi all

Hope you’re all doing as well as possible

I was just wondering if anyone had any late side effects from radiotherapy ? Mainly swelling / inflammation, stiffness / tenderness or anything else . I had mine 21 months ago after a mastectomy without reconstruction

I see my surgeon in the next couple of days for check up / mammogram anyway but just wondered

  • I am 3years in and still get tightness for a day and then it is gone ? swelling now and then, the joys of BC.kind regards

  • I developed breast edema 4 months after my radio finished . It’s calmed down now but was told side effects can last for years .

  • Thank you both , the joys indeed huh . My mind is racing and I’m worrying but I guess that won’t change anything !

  • My rads were in July, still ‘tight’ and I’m concerned it’s affecting shoulder movement, so am still stretching big time. I’ve asked for a physio assessment, as that shoulder had a decompression op years ago.

  • Hi, I'm 3 years post op and have breast lymphoedema. The impacted one is swollen and tender. I was referred to the late effects clinic and they taught me some massage techniques which do help.  Best wishes

  • Hi , that’s a good idea to ask for a physio assessment especially with your previous op

all the best with that xx

  • That’s good to know thank you

I will mention and see if they have a clinic

  • Hi  , I am 5 years plus post rads. I have breast lympheodema which is mild but I’m careful to keep it under control with Nordic walking (using special poles in a particular way) and exercise. It was confirmed at a lympheodema clinic - I got referred there after an oncology follow up appointment 10 weeks after rads finished. As far as I know I’ve got it for life. That breast is also still tender even after all these years, I assume from radiotherapy as it’s the whole breast, not just the excision area. I take paracetamol before mammograms which helps. Otherwise I pretty much forget about it, it’s just part of my ‘new normal’. Good luck with your mammogram and appointment, let us know how it goes. Love and hugs, HFxx
