Hi All

I had a lumpectomy back in April after chemo and then followed up with radiotherapy. I was told the scar tissue pain can last a.while, but I'm finding my arm and shoulder really painful still, especially when moving in certain directions. It almost feels like a frozen shoulder and muscle damage in the tricep. Just wondering if this is normal and how long it may last. Iam very conscious to keep the arm and shoulder moving  too.  Thanks!

  • Hi, I’m 13 months post surgery and if anyone hugs me it’s still uncomfortable. Scar tissue is still there.

I was also referred for physio as I had lost some mobility in my right arm. The exercises sorted me after two weeks.

To be fair if this is my lot, I’m happy and nothing too bad.

Hope you continue to improve over time.

  • Hi, I still have some aches and pains, more when pressing on the area, and I hate to say, this is 3 years on!  It would be worth talking to your GP and perhaps seeing if physio would help you. Best wishes

  • Hi Poorbooby,

I had the same as you in April. I was given a booklet and told to do arm exercises from the day after the operation, which I did, these exercises are vital as they ward off lymphoedema and chording and I had some of both. You just do what you can and gradually build up, I did them for some months and am fine. Also you must use the shoulder and arm as much as you can, don’t nurse it as this makes it worse.

Please contact your Breast Cancer Nurse and ask for help, also contact Macmillan (0808 808 0000) as they are brilliant  - you will also find your nearest Macmillan centre on this site.

    Takecare and big hugs.xxx

  • Hi Poorbooby

I had a lumpectomy nearly 4yrs ago and some areas are still painful to touch. Of course every one is different

    Hope you improve.

  • I also had the lumpectomy in April and have had similar issues as you. I have been to physio and seen a great improvement. I contacted the mcmillan nurses who booked me an appointment with my surgeon. The surgeon refereed me to physio.
