DCIS

I have stage 3 DCIS & the BCN informs me they are looking to do a lumpectomy.  I am unsure if I want a lumpectomy or mastectomy.  A mastectomy would mean it can't return & wouldn't require radiotherapy  ( always a plus). But a lumpectomy is less invasive and would leave me with 2 breasts rather than 1. I still don't know how I feel about only 1 breast Smirk

Anyone any personal thoughts / pros / cons

Thanks

  • Hi Holie

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with stage 3 DCIS.  While a mastectomy makes it less like that it will return, there is a small chance that it could come back.

Wishing you the best of luck with your surgery whatever you decide to do.

    Best wishes

  • In May 2015 age 51 I was recalled from my first rountine screening mammogram for 2 areas of calcification (10mm & 5mm).  From biopsy I was diagnosed with intermediate DCIS in the 10mm area only.  The smaller area was benign.  I had a WLE (lumpectomy ) in the July and 15 sessions of radiotherapy in the September.  11mm high grade DCIS was final diagnosis after surgery.   I recently had results of my mammogram & 9 years on no evidence of disease.

I'm glad I took my surgeons advice for the surgery & radiotherapy,   How large an area is your DCIS.  I just have a small dent from my removal .

  • I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS and because of the large size was only offered a mastectomy. However I was also recommended radiotherapy which I had ( 5 sessions).

I had surgery 15 months ago, rads 12 months ago. The post surgery biopsy showed a some small microinvasions so I’m hoping the rads have added some additional protection against it returning.

  • My DCIS is 25mm. I had biopsies from 4 areas, 3 were benign & the 4th showed high grade DCIS. Thanks for your reply & I'm pleased you show no recurrence.

  • Thanks BethS. I too hope your radiotherapy has given you added protection.
