Hi guys,
I am 6 weeks post surgery having had a right side Mastectomy with reconstruction (no chemo or radio needed) I feel so lucky. I've had a few issues with healing and have had to have weekly bandage changes and checkups. I've just finished 4 weeks of antibiotics and am still waiting for all test results to come back (hopefully next week)
My question is...
When did you feel ok to go back to work and when did you start feeling ok to do normal things? I'm feeling like I'm in a bubble and have been pottering around the house doing as much as I can that doesn't feel uncomfortable but have had no instructions from nurses or consultant as what I can do or what I should avoid. I've gone with, if that hurt, don't do again lol.
I can drive ok and due to start a new job doing bar work and waitressing at a local near me but I'm so anxious and don't want to start too soon. On the other hand, is it better to get back in the saddle and go for it?
Even getting anxious about what clothes to wear so I look ok and feel covered enough.
My new boss has been great and going with what I am able to do but if I start, I know I will push myself too hard.
Any advise would be great, thank you
Stay well, strong and positive

HiSarah2 , I noticed you haven’t yet had any replies, I just wanted to say it’s still very early days for you and your new shape will still be settling for months yet. Give yourself a chance to feel like a new you before rushing into too much! I assume you’re doing all the exercises suggested and advised? Do keep them up as shoulders don’t like getting stiff….

Might be worth giving your BCN a call? You should have a sheet which normally is given to every bc patient after a mastectomy. I’m sorry you seem to have missed that, the exercises are quite specific and carefully graded. Have a look at post mastectomy exercises on the ‘ breast cancer now’ we bite, I suspect they are there as a download. But I’m sorry you didn’t get a booklet given to you. I’m still doing mine (I had a recurrence and this time needed radiotherapy which can stiffen shoulders up too)
But you should as though you’re doing really well, was it an implant reconstruction?

I had a diep reconstruction and was told it was a 12 week recovery time to fully get back in it. Yes people can do more earlier and some people have office jobs which makes it slightly easier (in some instances) you have a physical and active job, so I would recommend you take as long as you can afford to up to say 12 weeks. I work in a primary school so again, very active and I was glad I waited until I felt stronger. All the best to you x
