X-ray and nuclear bone scan so anxious

Hi I’m beside myself with worry.  Breast cancer diagnosed Junr 2022, had mastectomy, radiotherapy.  On Letrozole, Abemaciclib and 6 monthly Zometa.

Have been having hip pain for 8 weeks so my oncologist sent me for an X-ray two weeks ago and a nuclear bone scan last Wednesday.   I’ve just received an appointment with my oncologist in person for 28th August. That will be 5 weeks after my bone scan.  I’m feel I cannot cope with the stress of not knowing the results.  Has anyone had to wait that long for scan results please? and how did you receive them (was it by a letter of appointment).

  • Hi Mibby

I've had bone scans after being diagnosed with breast cancer nearly four years ago and I haven't had to wait that long for the results.  If you feel up to it why not ring your oncologist's secretary and explain how the wait for the results are stressing you out and ask if your oncologist can see you sooner.

  • Thank you Daisy53 for your reply.  I’ve been considering contacting the oncology contact nurse but I’m so worried that I will be making a nuisance of myself.  I can’t help thinking that there’s a communication missing. Surely they cannot leave someone hanging in suspense for 5 weeks.

  • I'm sure they won't think that as they are there to help after all.

  • Hi, I’ve had these and my wait was three weeks because the nuclear bone scan was done in a different hospital trust, and getting the results transferred took a little while. It was very scary. It’s occurred to me that your oncologist might be on holiday for two or three weeks, hence the delay. If that’s the case, perhaps there might be another oncologist who could help?

  • Thank you Cloudier, my scan was done Thumbsup n the same hospital.  The holiday could be a factor but very unfair to just leave me in limbo.  I’m going to be so stressed waiting all that time!

  • I also had bone pains mainly the ribs and ended up having a bone scan.   I didn't have to wait for an appointment to get the the results  - was told they might take 10 days, but had a letter saying everything was fine in about 2 weeks.   Before the scan I was told it was precautionary and probably nothing to worry about.

  • Thank you 256 Dee.  I couldn’t wait any longer and phone the specialist oncology nurse today.  She was so kind to me and read my results which were normal apart from some, expected for my age, Degeneration of the lower spine and the start of arthritis in my feet.  She told me to still Keep the August 28 appointment.  I’m so relieved.

thanks everyone who replied to me, it helps so much to share a worry. Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hi mibby

Glad all OK. I was relieved when I got my all clear!!  Even no sign of arthritis which at my age was a bonus!

  • Glad to hear that your results were normal Mibby.
