Pulmonary embolism after a mastectomy

Hi all,

Has anyone had a pulmonary embolism after a mastectomy. I had a mastectomy 3 weeks ago and I was fine until last Saturday when I went to bed as I was feeling unwell and out of breath. I put it down to a mild infection in the drain site as it wasn't draining properly and became very angry.

Fast forward to 3 days ago, and went to the gp to get checked out on advice from the district nurses as my heart rate was 130 beats a minute and having terrible palpitations which were reallynsreon even walking 3 or 4 meters to the bathroom. Was admitted into acute medical unit for the night, had 10 ecg's in 24 hours and monitored very closely. Given blood thinners injections and then sent home with a month's supply of injections then back to hospital and then now having an enlarged right side of my heart because of the pressure, I have to be monitored and heart scans every 3 months for a year at least. I never hear of this happening to anyone, I am devastated as I though just going flat, not having to worry about after effects and it seems tonhave all now gone wrong and I'm not coping with the effects of breathlessness and taking my time. The breathlessness is getting better even after 3 days of jabs, but I am so frustrated with all the delays.

Has anyone else had this experience with the clots on the lungs. Gutted is an understatement.

Any advice on his to get my fitness back will be very welcome indeed. I know its time and I am walking around the house and now about 100m instead of the 5 so I suppose it is better but the tiredness is awful as well.

Sorry for the moan, yet again. X

  • Hi

I didn't have the same experience as you but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  •   so sorry you have had this experience. You are doing well,  very slowly increasing your exercise tolerance. You need more information re how to manage the condition. Could you ask them next time you see them at the hospital. You could also get help from your GP. Take care xx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!
