To city break or not to city break

Hi all

Hoping to canvas opinion from the hive mind!

I’m 4/6 into my chemo and phesgo treatment for triple positive BC in boob and nodes, due to have my last Docetaxical on 5th Aug. Before getting diagnosed I booked a 5 day city break and day festival in Berlin for my husbands 40th. We have an airbnb with my parents and toddler 4th-9th September.

its 4 weeks after my last chemo and pushes my surgery back by a week which my oncologist said isn’t a disaster. He said not much will change in a week in the usual non committal they do! The consideration will be my health, risk of infection, insurance, having  a plan for a hospital if I get a temp/infection and the possible knock on effect to delay surgery.

I want to go, cancer has already dominated my daughter’s first birthday and this year but also don’t want to do anything risky or silly when I’m going through treatment. I’m only 41 so getting and remaining clear of cancer is the primary goal.

Has anyone been away whilst having treatment or in the gap between chemo and surgery? Should I just cancel the trip or is it good to live a bit of life whilst still in the trenches?? I live with a toddler who’s at nursery and currently has hand foot and mouth so I’m constantly dodging one Germ or another.

I appreciate it’s done to us to make the decision but depending on frame of mind I could argue myself either way! thanks

  • At 4 weeks after chemo, your white blood cells are likely to be back to normal. If your oncologist is supportive (and that’s a condition of getting insurance anyway), I would seize the opportunity. Insurancewith are worth looking at.

  • Hi, I had chemo during Covid so the world was being extra careful about infection. I went camping in between cycles and I went to a work meeting a few days after my last chemo.  The work meeting was held outdoors (amazing now to remember that was a thing for a while) to minimise Covid risk so I was lucky that it all worked out for me.

If it were me and the oncologist was supportive, I would go. It might be worth seeing if your oncologist would prescribe you some antibiotics to take with you in case you get an infection when you are away. That would make things easier, though the German health system is good and generally Doctors speak English.
