I had a skin sparing mastectomy 5 weeks ago but my nipple was removed and I am now looking to flatten my scar where it is raised more at one end and fade it.
I have read all info, some suggest Bio oil, some say they have been recommended to stay away from it. I can see E45 and Aveeno suggested. I can also see silicone scar sheets seem to be recommended as the best from medical sites.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m leaning to the silicone sheets but there are so many on Amazon I don’t know which is the best as all seem to have 5 star ratings by some yet others give the same product 1 star.
Any advice, suggestions, brands, experiences would be welcome! Thank you x
Hi Miss Potters
Have you spoken to your doctor? It might be worth asking to see what they suggest.
I had a major road accident when I was 17 - my shin was degloved to the bone in one area and apart from muscle and skin being grafted over the bone, the rest of my leg from the knee to ankle was left for 13 months to heal naturally. Needless to say it was horrendously scarred. I was treated by the best hospital in the UK (at the time) for the specialist grafting. The gave me a garment which which was called a 'scar press' - so would be similar to flight socks. So, it might be that something to compress the scar may help.
I would ask a professional personally, as they may have something that they know has worked for others- your BC nurse might have a good idea as they will have seen so many ladies in this position.
Kindest Wishes, Lesley
Hi Miss Potters , I haven’t been advised anything re my long lumpectomy scar, but have chosen to use an oil from Palmers, think it’s based on cocoa butter but am out and about so can’t check atm! Personally I didn’t like the idea of bio oil as I believe it’s mainly mineral oil which I try to avoid. But nobody medical has told me not to use it. You could also post a question in the Ask a Nurse section for advice. Love and hugs, HFxx
Hi Miss Potters I used the medi grade scar tape from Amazon on my mastectomy scar. Mine was also a bit lumpy at one end. One of the breast nurses suggested I try the tape but didn't say which to use. I decided to try this one first as it wasn't too expensive and I could always try the more expensive ones if it didn't work. But it did the trick. It was very easy to use. I think I used it for 4 - 6 months. Not sure how long you wear it for but I guess you just keep wearing it until you are happy with the results.
Hope that helps.
