Holidays - after treatment

I am on cycle three of eight with treatment due to end around early/mid April.  I assume I will then have a break of 2-3 weeks before having a mastectomy (unknown if it’s double or just the single - I would rather the double but they might only offer a single) and then I think I read that full recovery from that is around six weeks - so that brings it to mid June?

The nurses mentioned I may then have immunotherapy every six weeks but that isn’t chemo - so I assume it shouldn’t cause me any issues.  I already have immunotherapy with my chemo at the moment.

So my query is - and I will ask my specialist whenever I see them next but wanted to ask others - once chemo is finished and I am recovered from the operation - I assume I can go abroad on holiday in like August this year?

Looking at doing a Mediterranean cruise or something like that and would like to get it booked to give me something to look forward to but I have no idea if August is unrealistic!!

  • Hi

I didn't have immunotherapy but had a lumpectomy last April followed by chemotherapy up until the beginning of December and then radiotherapy during the first 2 weeks of January. I then went away on holiday at the beginning of February. My holiday wasn't a cruise, so I don't know if there would have been any difficulties if it had been.

If you haven't done so already, can I recommend that you check that you will be able to get travel insurance before you book your cruise. Unfortunately, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis. There is a travel insurance group, where you'll find recommendations from others who have been successful, within the online community.

To join, just click on the link I've created, and then look for the thread called 'recommended travel insurance' as this is where the majority of recommendations are.

Most people recommend phoning the insurance companies rather than trying to do online quotes, as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also, sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.

    I hope this helps

  • Thanks.  I will check with the specialist but I would hope things will be ok by August.

Re the insurance, so even if I have finished treatment and have the all clear, I will still have issues getting insurance?

  • Travel insurance becomes easier to get, and more affordable, the longer it's been since you were diagnosed.

The holiday I mentioned that I went on last February was booked while I was still undergoing treatment so my normal insurer wouldn't cover me but I was able to get insurance elsewhere, although it was much more expensive. However, when I booked to go away in December my normal insurer would now cover me, although I still had to pay an extra premium for the cover.
