Hello All, lovely to meet you. A forum is very new to me. Was diagnosed with breast cancer in August, 2 surgeries later I’m cancer free, awaiting radiotherapy and have started hormone therapy. I feel blessed and grateful, however my family seem to have changed since we found out the cancer has been removed. It’s been quite a journey and has changed me in many ways. I feel like a different person now and feel quite isolated. I’ve tried to explain to family how I feel and they just don’t seem to get it. Has anyone else experienced this?
Hi Summer8
i think it’s hard for those who haven’t experienced cancer themselves to fully understand. They want the old you back ( see it as a compliment). The impact it has on you physically and emotionally is significant. Let them know how you feel, don’t hold back. It’s important they understand your emotions. Adjustment takes time. In the meantime you have this forum where there is always lots of support and understanding. Have a rant whenever you want. Sending hugs xxx
Thank you so much BethS, that really helps. There are so many positives to have gained from the journey, a strength I didn’t know I had, however there are also days I struggle with. In a way it’s a good thing they don’t understand, means they don’t really see what the actual journey entails. I feel like I’m a little distant from them, that they’re all pretty much the same and I’ve changed a lot. But I’m hoping in time, this new (and improved) version will be as close with everyone as I was. Thank you for taking the time to reply, really does mean a lot xxx xxx️
I know what you mean with the distance thing. It’s hard. Time will help and give you that special empathy for those less fortunate. Something like this does put other things into perspective - a new calmer, better you will emerge. Just give it time. Sending hugs xx
