Hi all , I'm just looking for information on zometa and why after post op it's prescribed thanks if anyone can help with this

  • Hi, I'm not 100% sure why it's prescribed post operation but I have Zometa every six months.  It's an infusion that takes about 20 mins. As I understand it, zometa helps to strengthen bones as the letrozole tablets block estrogen, which weaken the bones.  Also I think it helps prevent the risk of secondary bone cancer.    Hope this helps, best wishes

  • Thanks for your reply , I was a little nervous as to why... so we have 6 rounds of zometa is that correct, but then what happens afterwards as I will still be taking leterzole , sorry just worried x

  • Hi, you might find this link useful Zometa info

I understand that the recommendation is for 3 years of Zometa, although I also heard from my oncologist recently that new research suggests it can be useful for 5 years.   Best wishes x

  • Hi I was put on a Zometa infusion to help prevent bone cancer.  Again it is 6monthly and for 3 to 5 years.  At my next infusion I will be asking whether it will be for 3 or 6 months. I am TNBC and so not on anything else.  All the best

  • I’ve had two of my 6 monthly infusions which are for 3 years. I was told by my oncologist that it strengthens the bones and helps to prevent breast cancer spreading to the bones.  Was also told to have a dental check up before starting my zoladronic acid infusions.  I also had a DEXA scan before starting.  Hope this helps. All the best x

  • I was prescribed Calci D tablets at the same time of being prescribed letrozole.  The calci-D will be taken as long as I’m on letrozole (ten years in my case).  So when the zoladronic acid infusions stop, the calci-D will continue to help the bones.
