Good morning, I am almost 4 weeks post surgery after having a single mastectomy. I am still feeling so tired, has anyone else felt like this is it normal?

  • Hello.....

I think feeling tired can be quite normal.  I know some people just seem to bounce rapidly back but an operation like a mastectomy is a huge shock to the body. Anesthetics can take a while to leave the system too. However, sometimes the cancer and the treatments can cause changes to our bloods. If you are low in vital vitamins or iron you will also feel unnecessarily tired or even have fatigue which  different to tiredness hits you like a brick wall and you simply have to stop. Myself I had problems with B12 which I am still taking every 10 days. Therefore I recommend you chat to your BCN or GP or the surgeon and explain how you are feeling. They will either reassure that this tiredness is common and they expect it or they will organise a blood test which again will reassure as any deficiencies will be dealt with quickly and you will feel stronger.

The important thing today is to rest if you need to and stop feeling you shouldn't.  Everyone is different how they react to treatments and whilst some symptoms may overlap, we cannot say you can't feel like that today because I didn't  or she didn't.  There isn't a right or wrong. You feel as you feel and you need to treat things accordingly.

I hope you feel stronger soon. I think fatigue was one of the worst side effects I had particularly as it came when everything else had been completed. So please stop worrying. Everything is normal but check it out in case you need something extra and now you have had the surgery, the tumour is gone and you should feel recovered soon.

    Take care. Love Karen
