I was diagnosed 1week ago & im sure I’m not the only one who came home with more questions than answers. The MacMillan nurse asked me if I have a dentist. I have, but I didn’t ask why. Does anyone know?

Hi there! If you have any acid infusion to help stop C getting into your bones, this is done usually after treatments have finished, ie chemo and RT. It is important that your jaw and teeth are in good order as you cannot have any invasive treatment from the dentist once you’ve started on the acid.  Its vitally important you look after your terth and gums by brushing regularly and using dentistiks or floss to remove bacteria.  Don’t be alarmed as your dentist is fully aware of acid infusions. Tell your dentist whilst making appointment,.you will also need to have bloods taken prior to infusions, if that’s what you’re having..  Best wishes

  • Thank you. My treatment plan hasn’t been finalised yet, but my teeth are in good health thank goodness. Still have NHS dentist

  • I was told to have a dental review before my Zolandronic acid infusions start, as this can cause issues with jawbones and teeth.

That treatment is to strengthen my bones and counteract any weaknesses the hormone therapy might cause - but this drug and similar are used for some bone cancers too.

There are some injections that do similar jobs so they are just making sure.

Some treatments need to stop for a period before and after any required dental work.

Once you get your treatment plan all will become clear as they will talk you through each one.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that you have recently been diagnosed.  This forum is great for questions and knowledge from a wealth of people, so it's great that you have found it so early on.

I had ER+ type cancer, so I didn't need chemotherapy.  I had a checkup with my dentist (NHS) booked just before starting radiotherapy.  As I had to tell her about my medication, she prescribed Duraphat toothpaste for me to use before and during radiotherapy.  She said to use Corsadyl mouthwash, rather than the brands that I was using (ie - whatever was on offer in the supermarket!).  The Duraphat toothpaste has high fluoride.  I used the tube she gave me and that was it, but I have been using Corsadyl ever since.  I am now over 6 years since diagnosis and haven't had any issues with my teeth, so it was obviously good advice Slight smile

    Kindest Wishes, Lesley
