Hi , I have been diagnosed with breast cancer and I have a date for a single masectomy and reconstruction surgery 23rd Nov, I have a holiday booked 28th Dec ( booked before diagnosis) to go to Spain which is 5 weeks after surgery.  I know everyone is different but wanted to hear about people's experiences post surgery. Is it unrealistic to think I could possibly still go ? Or maybe I should just cancel ?  Would love to hear from  others about how they felt after surgery and how long it was until they felt OK to do things again . Thanks everyone  xxx

  • This is really helpful as I am also booked on to see my daughter on December 12 and hoping to have mastectomy and reconstruction before I go,  but its looking unlikely so I may try and go beforehand.. could you?

  • Hi, I went through the same in November 2020 with reconstruction from my back tissue. I have to admit it did take me longer to bounce back than I had thought, but I do remember being OK enough by Christmas. It really does vary as I didn't suffer many side effects after, etc. However I did then find out I needed to start a course of chemo in the January due to it being in lymph nodes so I didn't get to focus on just recovering from the surgery.

It would be great for you to have that break to look forward to so hopefully your recovery will go smoothly x

  • Thanks for sharing your experience,  how are you now? I have been told I might need radiotherapy or chemotherapy as a follow on treatment depending what they find whist doing the masectomy.  I just think a little sunshine and blue sky will do me  good  after surgery and before any  treatment starts but I am aware  things might not quite work out like that depending on how I feel and when my treatment starts but  the thought of going on my hols at some point in the near future when all this  sh-t show is over will help me stay positive and fight on through. My friends do call me Judith charmers lol. Sending lots of  love and hugs to everyone on this chat as we are all here for the same reason and trying our best to deal with the one thing that's changed our life's in one way or another , Cancer you can just  feck off . Anyhow onwards we go through this journey , marching  on with fight and positivity Heart️Heart️

  • I'm doing OK now thanks, I had 6 months of chemo then radiotherapy and another surgery to clear my lymph nodes, all during 2021 and the height of the pandemic. I was then all clear and I'm on tamoxifen and zoladex injections monthly as I wasn't menopausal yet. I'm still getting back to whatever 'normal' is and I do get very tired and suffer low moods from the hormone treatment, but strength wise I'm stronger than before my op and I have a personal trainer and do weights once a week, that I never thought I'd be doing!x
