Hello everyone I hope you are all ok Heart eyes

I thought I would start a post on pastimes or hobbies as I know it helps to keep busy.

As i live alone (no children or very much family support), I wondered if anyone wanted to share things they find help them during these difficult times?

I have just bought a Christmas jigsaw although it is taking me ages! I also love to read and am reading ‘The Christmas book club’ by Sarah Morgan. I tend to love thrillers or ghostly gothic novels and have an audible subscription although struggling to find anything on there to hold my attention.

I try to walk every day although the days post chemo I find it a struggle to get out of bed.

I have also started a journal as i read that this can be a good form of therapy.

What do you find helps? Any tips?

Thanks in advance

  • Great idea for a thread. I have found that life has closed down considerably during chemo so hobbies and interests have become very important.

I always have a simple knitting/crochet scarf on the go which I donate to charity when complete.

I have a colouring book on the go and find this quite therapeutic.

I download audiobooks from the library to listen to as an alternative to TV.

I have a tapestry kit on the go, and keep meaning to get a painting by numbers kit.

I do watch quite a lot of tv at the moment, and have found it worthwhile to go through a few channels and save a playlist of interesting and entertaining programs so when I don’t have the energy or concentration to look for something to watch I can choose from the list rather than settling on the first thing I see.

I read and make sure I have an engaging and uplifting book on the go.

using a combination of the above it helps to pass even the hardest of days.

when I feel well I try to batch cook for the freezer - especially soup. This is really welcome on days when you can’t face preparing food, and means you are getting some nutrition.

  • Lovely idea.  Hobbies help a lot.  I like to read, listen to music, going for walks on the beach.  I also like to bake, mostly cakes and cupcakes.  The radiotherapy team will be getting some at the end of the week. Grinning

  • The crochet is a good idea might give that a try, scarves only as can’t follow patterns.

I might see if I can create a playlist on my tv that’sa great idea thanks! I love history programs or art.

  • Do you live near a beach? Lucky you.

I’m not bad at cooking. I did try bread a few months ago which didn’t turn out too bad.
I try to walk daily even if I don’t feel like it.

  • Hi,

I'm enjoying time to read while recovering from surgery. I haven't started knitting/crochet yet as not sure if it would be too much so early post surgery, but my shoulder is improving and there is a baby blanket to finish.

I also have tons of stuff for paper crafting and for the first time in a while, time to spend making Christmas cards.

I bought a cross stitch picture template and I've just got the thread to start.

I also have some uni work, but I might defer this as I can't really concentrate on the research and essay writing.

Trips to nice walking spots will be on the cards once I can drive again.

I have a jigsaw somewhere, which I'd forgotten about

  • Well I love these ideas!

Days after chemo are tough and don’t feel like doing anything except sleep!!

Going for a walk as today is looking soo beautiful out there. There’s an old railway track that takes you in a circle.

  • Visited local church on my walk x

  • I haven’t tried bread making, must have a go. Love fresh bread.  Yes, I am near the Gower Peninsula, the beaches are beautiful.

  • Lovely thread! My main hobby is walking, it became my daily sanity saver during radiotherapy and it’s stayed that way. Happy to walk on my own but also have a best friend who shares my passion for it so we meet regularly. A walk plus a cafe is my favourite. Also do Nordic walking and have met new friends as it’s a sociable group. We often finish at a cafe or pub for a coffee. Not surprisingly my favourite thread here is the Walking back to happiness one!
At home my main distractions are reading and online scrabble. Also love a jigsaw  . Love to all, HFxx

  • Thanks HappyFeet great ideas.

Luckily I love walking too. Have a friend who loves it too but quite happy to go alone.
