Parallel universe

Hi I’m new to this! I was diagnosed with malignant breast cancer in June. Since then I’ve had 2 lumpectomies, some lymph nodes removed and now I’ve been told I need to have a mastectomy. I have had discussions about surgery, reconstruction, prosthetics etc. Most of the time I feel like I’m in a parallel universe and that we are talking about someone else … Not ME!!
Does anyone else feel like this?

  • Hi,

similar story, diagnosed in September, lumpectomy and SLNB early October, now scheduled in for mastectomy and axillar clearance in 2 weeks time. Currently getting through the days by pretending it’s not happening, oh and clearing out all the cupboards!
    it all feels very surreal.

I’m hoping that this is very normal

  • Do you mind me asking why the mastectomy now ? I had the lumpectomy and the slnb on the 17th but waiting still for results

  • Hi,

I got results on 31/10, they hadn’t managed to get clear margins (<1mm) due to size of tumour in relation to size of breast (small). The tumour was inner upper quadrant so close to skin and chest wall. Also 1 of 2 lymph nodes was positive.

    counting down to round 2!

  • Oh my goodness - that is almost exactly what’s happening with me! 2 lumpectomies and still no clear margins. The only difference is that I don’t have small breasts!!. My cancer isn’t getting picked up on mammograms now - they only know it’s there because of the biopsies to the margins. I’m waiting to see if it’s in both breasts or if I need chemo first, then a mastectomy. Like you I am using anything to pretend it’s not happening!

  • Oh dear, your are really going through it, do you know when you’ll get your results?

I’m still off work after the lumpectomy (there’ll be less than six weeks between the surgeries) and have been advised not to go back to work between. On the plus side my OHs wardrobe is now very tidy!
    mission clear the house

  • Just waiting for the results. I’m not sleeping well and I have loads to do as I’m moving house in a few weeks but I can’t concentrate on jobs as I’m so tired.  I don’t even remember to make lists.

  • Oh bless you, moving house is stressful at the best of times. Add to that the waiting for results, no wonder you’re not sleeping. I don’t think any of us sleep well
