Anxiety about diagnosis

Hi, I’m feeling really anxious just now about getting my results in a couple of days time.

Over the last couple of weeks since my diagnosis, I’ve been trying to keep busy and wishing I could get my results quickly.  But now, as the time gets nearer to finding out the type of cancer I have, I’m finding it difficult to distract myself and I feel scared and emotional.  It’s particularly hard because I’m living by myself and have nobody to talk to.

  • Hello Celie. Welcome to this forum and well done for coming here to start with. Here, you will be surrounded by a lot of supportive people who are here to listen and give advice if needed. It can be scary and emotional but you do not need to be alone in this journey. During this vulnerable time, know that there are many things that can help you. Ask away what kind of support you need. There’s MacMillan, Maggie’s, your breast care nurse and don’t forget your friends.

  • Hi, I completely understand, it's easy to be distracted for a while, but when it gets closer it's harder.  Don't forget you can always call the lovely folks here at Macmillan if you just want to chat, on 0800 800 0000.  Are there any things you particularly enjoy doing, maybe that's a good distraction for you this weekend. Can you get lost in a good book, or binge watch Netflix?  I found getting out, wandering around a local town or somewhere new, helped me, as there were things to focus on.  Best of luck for the coming days

  • Hi

As others have said what you are feeling is absolutely normal. Personally I zoned out , staring into space a lot not wanting to talk to people. The waiting is the worst part. This forum is brilliant so much useful information from people that have been on the same journeys.

  • Initially when we hear the cancer word we go into panic mode. The waiting is the worse part of this journey I found. Once your informed of the situation you will be able to process this, however, it might not reduce your anxiety depending on news received but it will help you to know what’s going on decide the next steps. I have found once the initial diagnosis is processed. and treatments plans put in place anxiety lessened but prior to this I was a walking wreck which is normal. Wishing you well and hoping  you receive good news .

  • Thank you for your reply.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply.

Thank you for sharing what helped you. I find I can distract myself for part of the time, sometimes it works and sometimes I can’t concentrate or find anything that stops it going around in my head.

  • Hi,

thanks for your reply and for sharing how it was for you.

     The waiting is definitely hard.

  • Hi,

    thanks for replying.

I think you’re right about the word cancer.  We’ve heard it so many times throughout our lives about different people and then all of a sudden it’s you and it stops you in your tracks!

Thanks for sharing and for the good wishes.  Best wishes to you too.
