Hi Everyone,

Well, after being diagnosed with a grade 3 triple positive cancer post surgery in December 2021 and going through chemo, herceptin , radiotherapy, and anastrazole, the 2 tiny lumps I first felt in May/June time have turned out to be 3mm and 1mm cancers ,post excision biopsy, this September. CT scans and bones scans were clear on the day of having them done.

Has any body else had a local recurrence so soon after their treatment and does any body have any stories of longevity following a recurrence so close to their treatment. Statistics are incredibly scary and definitely not in my favour.

The MDT meeting have decided that a mastectomy will be the safest option but I also wonder if anyone , who may be in a similar situation , has been offered any other treatment.

Feeling very vulnerable and a little bit pessimistic :(

As ever, love and hugs to all .

  • Hello WMK,

Is this the same type of cancer as before? I am asking because it can sometimes happen that after finishing with one type of breast cancer, another shows up. It's not common, but can happen.

There is a lady here on the forum who went through breast cancer twice, is now completely cancer-free, and as far as I can remember, completely discharged and requires no more follow-ups.

  • Hi Greycats,

Thank you for that lovely story but unfortunately it is the same rather aggressive cancer.

Cancer markers are still being checked so I have my fingers crossed that there may still be some be some treatments available to me to help prevent metastatic spread.

Take care and thank you again.

I’m so sorry to hear this BUT our NHS are very pro active and always look for the best solution to a problem.  Many of us who have had mastectomy’s are probably glad to get rid of offending article. Look forward and know you’re in the best hands xx

  • Thanks for explaining.

Has anyone mention the possiblity of genetic testing? Normally that would depend on family history, but in your case, the recurrance is making me wonder.

The other thing that comes to mind is that even with treatment, if one or two microscopic cells manage to survive, they can then cause fresh trouble. It is great they caught it while it is localised in the breast only, and I can see why they are now stating that the safest option is to do a mastectomy.

By the way, I have had two mastectomies, about 7 months apart. I opted for no reconstruction, so now I am completely flat and feeling oddly liberated -- no more bras! (I do have a bra and inserts, but never used them.) I was not too keen when they first mentioned a mastectomy, but knowing I have done everything I can in the direction safety is helping a lot looking forward.

  • Thank you for your reply .

I have had genetic testing and nothing showed up but both my Mum and Grandmother had BC. My Grandmother sadly died from it but my Mum was caught early following mammogram and survived into her 80's.

I'm glad you feel liberated by your mastectomies. I don't feel too concerned about my pending surgery but may not feel quite the same afterwards Slight smile but will go through anything to be rid of the beast!!

As a PS, I accidently put this message through to be monitored Disappointed Whoops!. and don't know how to cancel that. Sorry!

  • Haha, I think that pressing by error the "flag to moderator" button is something quite a few of us here have done. No worries.

I am going to keep an eye on this thread and I hope you will update. If it is not too intrusive, I would want to know what they are recommending after the mastectomy, considering you have already had a lot of systemic treatment previously, and how they are proposing to monitor you from now on.

  • Hi Greycats,

I will certainly keep you up dated when I know what, if any, treatment is proposed.
