Sore, flaky nipple

Hello all, I was diagnosed October 2022 with BC. I had a lumpectomy and a second op to clear margins, lymph nodes were clear.

I had Grade 2 IDC and DCIS, ER positive and HER2 negative. I finished radiotherapy at the end of March this year and now taking Tamoxifen for 5 years.

Since the radiotherapy I have had breast and nipple pain, I’ve been back to see my breast surgeon and over the last few months had 3 ultrasound scans. I have fluid in the breast, but nothing else was found.

Today I noticed that there was flaky skin on my nipple and it is very red, I’m now worried about this as I haven’t noticed it before. I moisturise daily with Aveeno. Has anybody else experienced this before?

  • Hi Valleyside welcome to the forum. When you say fluid Im curious as to  what exactly you are meaning as fluid in your breast could be Lymphodema and flaky skin and redness could be a possible cellulitis developing so you need somebody to look at that for you as soon as you can and to give you some re-assurance as to what exactly that is. It could be from the Radiotherapy but it needs seen by a medical person.

  • Thank you Gail for your reply. Yes the fluid is Lymphedema, but my breast surgeon said it didn’t need draining. I will give my BC nurse a call today xx

  • Hi Valleyside it doesn't need draining  but you do need to see someone that knows about Lymphodema to get that fluid moving. I have the same and I saw the Lymphodema Nurse and she said to go without my bra some days when I'm not going out. She also said to jiggle the breast about.  I know it sounds daft thinking about it, but it works to move the lymph fluid. The things we go through. Get that nipple area checked out as this could be a cellulitis and if they say that's what it is you need an antibiotic and a 2 week supply, so not the usual 1 week that is standard.

Did you manage to speak to your breast nurse at all? xxx.
