I’m feeling really naive … I’m 3 weeks post 12 weeks of chemo, have had two wide local excisions with poor margins and now waiting for mastectomy date … I wore cold cap at every chemo session and hung onto my hair, but now I’ve finished chemo, it’s falling out in clumps - I did not realise this would happen :-( does anyone have any advice please? Should I have it cut very short so it’s less traumatic when it falls out? I went from long to above my shoulder when I started chemo. Thank you so much
Hi, sorry to hear your hair is falling out, I must admit, I found that really quite distressing when it happened to me. I decided to have it cut short, but it got to the point it really was falling out and leaving bald patches and then my lovely hairdresser came to my house and shaved it off. That was pretty emotional, for me and my husband. But…..I had the most fantastic eg, in a new style and colour, and I loved it (and secretly even miss it a little bit today even with my own hair back). Best wishes as you get through this phase
Hi lovely
sending you a big hug , I understand how upsetting it is when your hair comes out . With some people , the cold cap just delays the hair loss or stops all of it from coming out , it depends on the individual
Having it short definitely helped me , don’t get me wrong , I was really upset but it was certainly better than clumps and longer strands coming out . I used a silk pillowcase and gentle shampoos and a gentle scalp scrub that helped too
love
xx
Thank you - it sounds like you had a great wig, did it feel hot? I just didn’t realise this could happen after chemo!! You’re right - each part of treatment brings its own challenges!!
Thank you so much for your tips. Yep I think I’ll have it cut short next week and then see if it continues in terms of what I do next.
i left mine long, its a lot of hair to deal with. I also have a good wig, got a compliment on it today in a shop, she liked teh cut and colour, i told her she could buy it, she was surprised it was a wig . bought one bye raquel welch because it was on sale and glad i spent the money,i also bought a cheap one on amazon and its hot be good in sept for a change
Hi, the wig didn't feel tant hot, sometimes a little itchy by the end of the day, but I wore it most days for hours and got used to it quickly. If you think you will use it a lot, might be worth investing in a good quality one and getting it fitted rather than buying in line.
My hair has come out in handfuls from day 15 of cycle 1 of EC. Being able to pull your own hair out is a very strange experience and I had mine cut all over with a number 2 clipper which has left a patchy peach fuzz.
I cope by telling myself that the chemo has been effective in killing rapidly dividing cells and I just hope it has been as effective on cancer cells as it has my hair follicles.
I too miss my hair.
