Hello I am due to have some lymph nodes removed next week and now the operation nerves are kicking in.  I haven't had a general anaesthetic since I was a teenager but that was a bit of an adventure then.  It's all becoming a bit too real now Disappointed.

  • For me the anaesthetic was the scariest part of the op.  The staff were brilliant with me.  I live in Spain and my first name is Dora.   I was wheeled into theatre to a huge chorus of Hola Dora!   Dora the Explorer still a big thing here obviously.  That settled my nerves loads, the staff were brilliant.

  • Hi, I get you completely, the anaesthetic was what I was most worried about, but I tried to put it from my mind by keeping busy and remembering that they do this hundreds of times a day all over the world.  Hope you can find some stuff to do to distract yourself between now and then and good luck for next week

  • Hi Online Sally,

I felt very apprehensive about the anaesthetic too.  I did not have to worry.  It was fine.  The staff were great and made you feel relaxed.  I even walked into the theatre!  All I remember then is having the mask over my face and then nothing.  It was a relief to wake up in the recovery room I have to admit. That was what I worried about the most, silly I know as they do hundreds every day.  So I am sure you will be ok.  I wish you well with your op.  Try and keep yourself occupied, go for walks etc.  Take care xx

  • Hi onlinesally.I too am going through the operation nerves.Actually I am petrified. I am due to have lumpectomy & possibly 1/3 lymphnodes removed.I am booked in for September 5th.i was diagnosed July 25th.I can't cry, have gone through stages of shock fear, anger, numb, but I know we are all going through this & can take comfort in being on the forum.massive hugs to everyone.xx

  • Hi, I too had to go through the diagnoses of breast cancer 2 months of my Dad dying of cancer. I had to have a lumpectmony and some of my lymph nodes removed. I have a phobia of needles so would highly recommended a prescription of diazepam before your procedure. I was highly anxious but one week on it isn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. You are stronger than you think xx

  • I had this operation on Monday, and I was in and out within 12 hrs.  I was scared as the mask was popped on me, but it seemed only seconds later that I was propped up in the recovery room being offered some water.  It was actually about 1.hrs later.  I think that the worst part was the waiting tbh, I arrived on the ward about 7 a.m., but was taken to theatre about 12:30pm.  I seemed to spend most of the morning going to the toilet, I probably overdid my water intake on Sunday as I read somewhere to drink plenty in advance but obviously not after midnight! Thanks to everyone for the support Slight smile

Now have to get my BP checked as they were concerned about it - and waiting to hear from the plastic surgeon for tje next step.

  • Hi it's completely natural to be scared. I went through similar when I had my lumpectomy and lymph node removal in November. And my other half was scared too. Even nurse who walked me to theatre commented how scared he looked.  Remember it's the start to getting rid of this horrible thing onwards and upwards.

    Xxx

  • Hello,

I was scared too, I don’t cope with needles. But once the cannula was in, only takes seconds and I was out. Next thing was on the ward, a bit high from meds I think!
They treated me royally, more cups of tea and bix than I had expected. Wonderful nurses.

Home next day with one drain which was removed one week later in Breast Clinic- painless!

    Best wishes

  • I am also scheduled for surgery on sept 5th.  I had a wobble yesterday after meeting my surgeon and having pre op assessment.  Good luck.  X

  • I know it’s easy for us to say as you are going through it right now and your mind will be all over the place. Honestly I had Senetal lymph node biopsy and 3 weeks later Double mastectomy and yes I was petrified with the thoughts of surgery but can say hand on heart that it was much better than I expected procedure and pain-wise following it. You’ll be fine and will be advising others like we are doing now in a Matter of weeks. Speedy recovery.
