Hi There
I have been told to stop taking tamoxifen as I am in for a lumpsectomy in 3 weeks. I have only been on it for just over 4 weeks.
Will I have any side effects just stopping the medication dramatically?
1) worried about stopping it for 3 weeks as only just on it really
and 2 worried the cancer will spread is stop taking it
Is anyone else in or has been in the same situation
Thank you xx
Hi Fizzler , my situation was different but I did have gaps between treatments which I found worrying but do not seem to have affected the outcomes (positive so far!). I didn’t start my hormone treatment (Anastrozole) till after my op, about 10 weeks after my initial breast clinic appointment. My op was in between, about 5 weeks after that initial visit and the lump didn’t grow in that time, or I assume not as it was very slightly smaller than the initial estimate from the ultrasound. I also had a 10 week gap between my op and radiotherapy, which made me anxious at the time and worried about spread but in fact in retrospect I’m glad as it gave me more healing time. So far there’s been no evidence of spread or recurrence and it’s nearly 5 years. So my long ramble (sorry!) is just to say that I think these beasts are quite slow growing. And best to let your body just deal with the op, then get back on it when the medics advise. I don’t think I’ve seen anything here about withdrawal symptoms when stopping and I’ve not seen anything either about stopping gradually so I think (but I’m not a medic) that it’s very usual to simply stop with no ‘tailing off’.
Hope the days pass quickly to get your op over and done with - do you have a date yet? I definitely felt relieved to get that stage done. Love and hugs, HFxx
Anyone who opted out to don't take tamoxifen. I have been told to take it for 10 years and I am only 40, also doc said it would protect 30/40% only from redcurrants, so really not sure what to do.
Hey, thank you for the response. That has put my mind at rest but of course realise that everyones journey is different.
Have a great day and great to hear your positive story today :)
Hello there, I am 50. I suppose I wouldn't opt out of taking the Tamoxifen as hopefully it is going to block the estrogen which is ER and PR positive +. I have had to come straight off my HRT. Personal choice though and I am sure lots of BC stories are different. I am newly diagnosed so a bit early to say how my body will react to treatment yet.
