I found a lump two weeks ago, attended the Dr's the following morning. On Friday I went to my local hospital for a mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and a clip inserted. I was told that day that the Dr thinks I have breast cancer. Is this normal to be told on the day ? I know what I heard but my husband has said to wait until I go back on 15th August to discuss my treatment plan as he believes that they'll tell me then if i have cancer or not. I sat with a brest cancer nurse afterwards so I know I've not got this wrong about what the Doctor said. Has anyone else been told they have cancer without having the results from the biopsy back ?
I was told the same when I had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy that it was his opinion it was a small cancer then got results 10 days later to confirm it was and the type of cancer, I didn't get the marker clip put in until after my 1st chemo but everything else moved quite quickly from diagnosis to my 1st treatment for me was just under 3 weeks x
Hi, so sorry you’re facing this…..yes, I too got told that it probably was on that day, in fact the doctor who did the ultrasound looked serious as he prepared to biopsy even before I saw my surgeon.
But there’s a lot of planning before you get your very own treatment plan. At least you now know the chances are high that it’s cancer.

Hi Penners , sorry you find yourself here, not a club we’d choose to join but a great place for support. My experience was very similar to yours, one stop shop with initial examination by doctor (who said even at that point that it felt ‘suspicious’), mammogram, ultrasound, biopsies then back to doctor. She said she was sure it was very likely to be cancer but that it looked small and was probably early stage. So a shock but with some reassuring overtones is how I’d describe it! Had a chat with a cancer nurse afterwards, then back for biopsy results a couple of weeks later which confirmed that it was cancer.
I think these days they are open about what they think and I also suspect that the scans show more than they used to so the doctors can make a pretty good ‘informed guess’ from the images, even before the biopsy results confirm that it’s cancer. The results are still very important though as the nature of the cancer will determine possible treatment options.
For me it was better to know there and then as it gave me time to accept the news before getting the more specific information when I got the biopsy results. We’re all different but I felt more prepared and able to take in the next bit of news ie the type of cancer and what treatments they proposed. They did emphasise that breast cancer is very treatable nowadays, which is true! And I’m still here rattling around this site, nearly 5 years post diagnosis.
Sending love and a big virtual hug your way, will be thinking of you on the 15th, HFxx
I was told the same day too - that they were pretty certain it was cancer, given what they could see on ultrasound and family history.
I don't think they would tell you that if they weren't very sure.
My biopsy results came a week later but it wasn't a surprise to me that I had cancer.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
