Im awaiting a mammogram recall on monday. I'm moderately positive that it will be okay so after binge watching youtube I've managed to sufficiently distract myself from the appointment. This is my third mammogram.
I actually wanted to ask a different question and gauge opinion. Before I got my letter I was beginning to think that I needed to change my lifestyle, my job. I've had an office job all my life. I think it is taking too much of a toll on my body now that I am in my 50th year. Is this possible I wonder? I've not been a consistent exerciser, I try more now, but its a hard curve when you haven't been exactly in an active role for the rest of the 8 hours in the day eg sitting too long.
Has anyone out there who has been in that 'responsible' job mode, earning a steady income, sat behind a desk got to a certain age and started to question whether they can do this any more. Its sort of a feeling of missing out on life and just feeling yuk from doing an office job. The mammogram recall of course has advanced this feeling. If I am clear I think I might be more motivated to make a move, if I'm not I'll sit tight and obviously take advantage of my sick pay and corporate assistance I've earnt from the years of service.
The question then is, what would you do / change career terms - what to do other than sit behind the desk that is going to earn a moderate income etc at 50?
Hi catfriend
Facing a possible cancer diagnosis makes you realise that life is too short to be doing something that doesn't bring you joy anymore. It's possible that your job is taking a toll on your body.
Have you any idea what you'd like to do instead? It's always helpful to have an alternative in mind when you are thinking of changing jobs. You would need to weigh up the pros and cons of changing jobs at this point in your life.
I hope this reply is of some help as you weigh up the possibility of changing jobs.
Best of luck with your mammogram.
Best wishes

I have worked in admin since leaving school and after my mum passed away from Ovarian cancer several years ago I felt that I needed a kick up the backside. I have had very well paid jobs with good level of leadership responsibilities. However cancer makes you question alot about your life. We needed an income but just enough to get by and have a holiday. So I took a job with possibly the worst paid organisation in the UK, the NHS and have never looked back. Yes it is still admin but there are so many opportunities to move around with the hospital working for different specialities which do not all involve sitting on your backside every day. I took a drop in salary and accepted a no staff responsibility role as a receptionist working in outpatients which I loved. On a rota you work in different departments each morning and afternoon. I started as a band 2 and after gaining NHS experience I am now a band 5 working alongside a clinical team doing their admin. No 2 days are the same.
So if you are interested in just earning enough, practically never taking a lunch break but enjoy a good laugh and a job that is worthwhile then I would recommend the NHS! They are also flexible with their hours, I work full time over 4 days per week
Best of luck with your future decisions xxx
