Hi all can anyone recommend any medical journals that I can access to make an educated decision on whether to take Letrozole or not please? I'd like to find some studies/statists that will help with this. I'm kinda thinking, am I more at risk of the side effects particularly heart disease and stroke (runs in my family) than the cancer coming back. I can't seem to find anything helpful and feel that I'm between a rock and a hard place Disappointed

  • Hi Reddress70 welcome  to the forum. As far as I am aware these drugs are part of a treatment plan for Breast Cancers which are ER+ so they are fed by Oestrogen, hence, these drugs cut of that supply thereby reducing the risk.  Have these been recommended for you?

I don't know about any research as such but there is a predict tool, but it should really be used in a discussion with someone with Knowledge of Breast Cancer (my specialist breast nurse did mine with me) which ensures the accuracy of the inputted info.

The other thing that you may like to think about is to post your question into the Ask a Nurse section of the site as they may be able to direct you to any research, advice or where to access more information.

Hope you manage to make an informed choice.

  • Breast Predict is a calculator used by oncologists.  Have you had an oncotype score run? They give approximate benefit.  The side effects are different for everyone,  so you'd need to see how they effected you.

  • Aww that's good to know in terms of risks and benefits. Thank you for highlighting this to me Blush

  • Thank you for heading me in the right direction 'ask a nurse' Blush

  • Just read the research comparing Tamoxifen and Aromatase inhibitors. I started on Letrozole but changed to Tamoxifen after 3 mths. My GP prescribed Statins which I eventually agreed to take. I prefer Tamoxifen, my knee was playing up badly and I have osteoporisis. The Oncologists are mainly concerned with the cancer not the effect or side effects these drugs have.

It's not an easy read but it's was a Nurse so understand some of the terminology. They both can cause problems to a small number of people statistically, their word is insignificant number. It's very significant if it happens to you. My knee was really sore going up steps. Someone I have got to know has a walking stick now and mobility problems because if Letrozole.

We do have choice it seems although my oncologist refused to accept I have osteoporisis, I have been treated for it for 2 yrs, so I don't understand why he even said that. Hope that helps. Xc

  • Hello Wave thank so much for taking the time to write to me about your experiences. I agree the research paper is quite highbrow and actually very contradictory. In one paragraph it's says the risk is high for getting cardiovascular diseases and stroke (which is my biggest concern due to family history) so I'm thinking ok, this isn't good and I read on only to find it says that the results found in the study weren't a big risk! Then it mentions having to ensure that studies aren't bias in any way, which makes we wonder how accurate the results are. I ache terribly now due to the Menopause especially my back, which wakes me up sometimes, so the thought of that being any worse would definitely effect my quality of life for sure.xx
