Hi Everyone

I wondered if anyone has used any alternative remedies or supplements for menopause Al symptoms. Hot flushes, Vaginal atrophy, anxiety, mood etc

I had a call from the menopause nurse at my GP practice and she was as much help as a chocolate tea pot. Obviously I cannot use HRT and also my bcn has informed me that I cannot use any plant based oestrogen as my bilateral breast cancer is hormone dependant for both oestrogen and progesterone. It seems that everywhere I turn Davina McCall and friends encourage people to use HRT but what do we poor souls use if we are unable to due to cancer. I’ve had one operation and am scheduled for a second then onto radiotherapy and hormone inhibitor tablets namely letrozole as far as I know.

Ive had black cohosh, black seed oil, sage leaf recommended to me to name but a few but when I research I’m faced with ‘ not if you’re cancer is hormone dependant’

I am at a loss now so any suggestions would be gratefully received before I spend another day in the freezer

Thank you all for reading

  • Hi, I have been prescribed Replens, to help with vaginal dryness, as it's not oestrogen based.  It helps for day to day comfort for sure so it might be worth talking to your GP about this. It’s available over the counter, but also on prescription.  Best wishes

  • I would avoid all herbal supplements as they tend to be phytoestrogens, which are no good if you've had BC.

I had replens and regelle from GP but I have found Balance Active Menopause to be better for me, though I have to buy it. It has hyaluronic acid in it, which has shown to be as good as oestrogen cream in studies for vaginal atrophy.

As for mood swings, I got so fed up with no longer feeling like me that I went to my GP and asked for a low-dose anti-depressant. A few of them interact with tamoxifen but I think most OK with an AI which is what I'm on. It has been brilliant, I feel like me again, have stuck to the lowest dose and they can also help with hot flushes. I think I do get fewer hot flushes and night sweats, but the big change is that I don't get that panic-attack feeling that would come with them, so I find them far easier to cope with. I am also sleeping far better. I was awake for hours before - which is no good for your mood either! I am also no longer anxious at night time.

  • Hi - I’ve been informed I should be able to continue with my Starpower menobalance - it doesn’t include red clover, St John’s wart nor black cohosh. Not yet on meds as awaiting my op.  Best wishes and hope you find something soon!

  • My cancer is TNBC so oestrogen isn’t a factor. However when I discussed continuing Vagifem for vaginal atrophy / dryness, my consultant said they are happy for anyone to use it, as it’s topical. I also use Balance Activ. I have used Replens but find it leaves a clotty white residue that in itself causes itching, somewhat negating the benefit.

  • My surgeon also was fine with Vagifem as it prevents me from getting UTIs, saying even if any oestrogen gets absorbed (apparently fairly unlikely) it’s a question of quality of life. And I used to get UTIs suddenly and severely before I began Vagifem.

Im not sure of anything that halts those hot flushes though. One person I know has acupuncture which is an idea…..

  • Hi. I have used Yes vaginal moisturiser in the past. It is non hormonal and seemed good. You can buy it online or get it on prescription. Best wishes.

  • Hi there

sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. Been a roller coaster esp after radiotherapy and breathlessness and hematoma on breast following second surgery!

Im awake more than asleep and feel exhausted and aching after being on letrozole. As well as hair seems to be thinner than normal although hairdresser said not

I wanted to ask you about the antidepressant you’re on as anxiety isn’t good at best of times but has def got worse Disappointed

    hope you’re ok
