Hi

Im Ally . 2 years+ clear after early stage Oestrogen+ Breast Cancer. I had a lumpectomy and Radiotherapy , my gynaecolgist has suggested using low dose vagifem for relief of non specific dermatitis in the vulva region (probably exasperated by taking anastrozole an oestrogen suppressant, menopause etc) .

Reading the instructions and advice Im unsure whether to try it, most research seems to point towards it not being absorbed into the body and being ok to use post breast cancer but the instructions mention it.

Im waiting to hear back from my breast consultant of her advice but wondered if anyone had experience of this, grateful for any thoughts/advice

  • I have TNBC so it’s not oestrogen driven. When I was first diagnosed I asked the consultant whether it was ok to continue with Vagifem as it was TNBC and she said she wouldn’t have had an issue with it even if my cancer were ER+. I understand not all medics take the same view mainly out of uncertainty about how it’s absorbed. I suffered very bad dryness / itching / atrophy before I started it so would have fought to stay on it for overall quality of life and mental health reasons anyway. Penetration had become very painful and hugely upsetting for both of us.

  • thanks thats exactly the symptoms and problems Ive been having for seceral years now which is very upsetting to us as well at times. Thats good to hear what your consultant said that is what my gynae consultant also said so hopefully my breast consultant will say the same. Thank you for your post thats so encouraging

  • Hi. I had early stage breast cancer ER+ in October 2021. I had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy and I’ve been on Letrozole for 18 months now. I was prescribed Vagifem by my GP last summer but I didn’t start using it until I spoke to both my breast surgeon and oncologist who were both happy for me to use it. This is only my experience but their view was that it is ok as it is a topical treatment. It has definitely improved my quality of life. Best wishes

  • thank you thats good to hear, I should hear from her tomorrow but this sounds positive I didnt realise there was something like this that could help I was resigned to just putting up with it Grin
