Second biopsy appointment

Hello! After my first mammogram appointment in April (I'm 51), I was asked to attend an appointment for another mammogram, ultrasound and needle biopsy at the end of May. I've now been told I need a 7G vacuum assisted biopsy. Everything feels a little big vague, I guess because they don't want patients panicking but I like to know details! The uncertainty is really frustrating. Does anyone have experience of two rounds of biopsies and why it might be necessary?

Thanks for any insight you might have.

  • Hi, yes I had the same, had an MRI which threw up another area they wanted to look at - not seen on previous ultrasound.  They told me at the 2nd biopsy they thought it may be a pre cancerous bloom in the same breast as my tumour but I received my results yesterday and turns out it is actually part of my original tumour, it's just much bigger than they thought.

  • Yes I do. I went through 2 biopsies in my neck. The first time the doctor actually said he couldn't get a proper result ass the needle wouldn't penetrate the a couple of weeks later I had to go back and sign a disclaimer as the needle was twice the size of the first one.  In all honesty without being morbid if it wasn't for a 16 inch needle right through my neck I'd be dead.

  • Hello LlamaFarmer. I can sympathise with you. I also went through the same process when the MRI scan showed more lumps that were not detected by the ultrasound scan. So I had second biopsy. I like to think that they are just thorough. I, too wanted details and more information so I searched about my case. The MacMillan website is helpful so you can start from there. Be careful with the other sources though and don’t get overwhelmed with what you might find. Remember your case will be individual to you and some info will be generic. Your MDT will give you the details so just be prepared with all the questions you have in mind. I wrote mine down so I didn’t miss anything. I hope that helps. I wish you all the best..

  • Thanks all. I just called the Breast Care Unit and they said they found a 15mm micro calcification cluster in the right breast and the biopsy showed atypical cells but those results were indeterminate that's why I need to go back for a different kind of biopsy. I should have just called earlier but I didn't want to bother them! Anyway, they were perfectly happy to explain what they had on file.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. xx
