Hi
Understanding this is a long shot, BC suggested posting on here but don’t mean to scare anyone, what happened to me is very rare.
Diagnosed with breast cancer after routine mammogram on the 14 th February, biopsies followed and surgery on the 31st March, lumpectomy and lymph node.
Unfortunately cancer traces were found in the first lymph node that was removed, although surgeon was happy with breast but would need treatment. Surgery went well recovery was great.
Booked in again on the 11th May for full lower arm lymph removal, thrush didn’t go according to plan, I went down at 9am and woke up at 12.30 in icu. I was told I had a reaction to antibiotics/anesthetic. Resulting in my blood pressure plummeting, ventilated and heart compression. Discharge note stated cardiac arrest.
Talk of visiting allergy clinic at St James but there was a 6 month waiting list, the waiting game that wasn’t an option. Booked in again for today the 2nd June. A off the cuff phone call to speak with the anesthetiser who had looked after and referred me on Tuesday led to me being told that the anesthetised had refused to operate until I had testing.
At this point I had received all paper and booked in for bloods on Wednesday. Surgeon confirmed op was cancelled and I now have an appointment for allergy testing on the 12th June as I am still classed as critical unfortunately no one thought to tell me that allergy testing can not be carried out till 4 weeks after reaction.
After MDT meeting yesterday I was given two options one to begin radiotherapy for breast and armpit, no chemo, allergy testing and hormone blockers. Second option surgery after allergy testing and start hormone blockers now. Surgery asap after testing.
I’ve lots of apologies for being messed about and I am constantly being told I have been unlucky as my case is so rare. I was initially told in the grand scheme of cancer mine was good and my nodes had scanned clear, I was slow growing and none aggressive tiny lump behind my nipple picked up by mammograms on the 14th February.
I’ve opted for surgery after family meeting and unable ti live with anymore ifs and buts than needed. I am seeing a councillor since I nearly died. Off work, I love my job in school but they’re scared of me catching anything. I feel shafted as there has been a lack of communication between departments and no one taking overall over ship of me with the different things that have happened. No one seems to communicate with each other let alone me.
if anyone has had anything similar happen, please.
That's a rough ride. 30 years ago my sister had heart attack after they took her back to theatre for bleeding straight after bowel surgery. She's had a few surgeries since and she did have known heart murmur. They never allergy tested her but always has to see anaesthetist before. I had to have appointment with one too because after an emergency C section by general I swoll up so he wanted to discuss plus my allergy to penicillin. He was so reassuring though telling me they had many drugs available to them and if they aware of issues they monitor.
That’s poor that you feel communication is lacking. Have you thought of contacting PALS (Patient Liaison Service) and outlining your concerns about what has happened as well as your worries moving forward? I had a similar situation (at LGI) over a different issue and they were actually very helpful. It also formalises your concerns in writing which is no bad thing.
Also have you been over to Maggies at Saint James? Always someone to talk to there and a lovely environment to be in too.
Bless you, this is the last thing you need right now.
Good to hear that it’s a slow growing cancer - I would have gone for the same option as you.
Jan x
Thank you, I am currently looked after by the Magnolia Centre at York, staff have been amazing. Just disappointed in the lack of communication between surgeons and anesthetist.
I have had an allergy testing appointment confirmed for the 12th of June and BC nurse has promised they will fight to get me operated on asap, they meet on the 15th June. In to mean time I’ve been prescribed Letrozole, booklet in the post yesterday. At least I feel like I am doing something.
Thankyou x
