Hi,

I'm due to start chemo in around 3 weeks.  (4 x EC ,  4 x Paclitaxel).

I'm making a list of things I might need and wondered if you lovely knowledgeable beings might be able to add wisdom before I start buying stuff I do/don't need.

So far I have a general list :

thermometer

hair net/sleep cap

sls free shampoo (already use Liz Earle but read on here faith in nature is good)

polybalm

dry eye spray/drops

mouth wash (possibly provided)

I'm thinking of leaving meds for either diarrhoea or constipation until needed to save cash, and I've no idea what I'll want to do about head coverings yet.

For chemo days :

water bottle

phone & charger

leave in conditioner

book

sweets

blanket

I've already got some aloe vera gel in prep for RT.

Any wisdom from experience gratefully received.

  • Hi Mrsp2003

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.  I can't think of anything else that you need to get, you seemed to have covered everything that you need on your list.

The one piece of advice I'd give you is to take your anti-sickness tablets during the first few days after each treatment.

Wishing you the best of luck with your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Hiya. You will probably get your laxatives and mouthwash on prescription at chemo unit - I did. If you are having a picc line you might want to buy some picc line covers. I used Anna bandana for those and some headgear. The other place I have found scarves is charity shops. If you want to buy a wig in case you might find again your chemo unit can help. And make a contribution. You also get wigs vat free as medical equipment.  Make sure you apply for a prescription exemption certificate to get anything else on prescription - NHS website. I have a digital thermometer .

I took my laptop first couple sessions and watched Netflix.

  • Hi, thanking Tavares for the recommendation, here's the link to my blog of everything I wish I'd known before chemo. Best of luck

  • Thanks everyone for your contributions, it's been really helpful.  I'll get something for heartburn in as well.

Nose hair! I hadn't even thought about that!  ooooo what fun.

  • Yes it certainly is.  I lost all my body hair (yes all) and about 80 percent of head hair. The nose is a pain as you have constant runny nose

  • Fluffy socks! The others covered the important stuff so… fluffy colourful socks. They are not needed but it’s nice removing your shoes and lying back in the chair with fluffy socks. Just something you don’t need but makes you feel good basically. Apart from the socks my good mood item is a lemon scented hand gel. Not suggesting the specific items but take a thing or two that you don’t need. Treat yourself in a way. Doesn’t need to be expensive just some things that make your day. Could even be a ridiculously large cupcake :)

    Best wishes

  • The big decision is whether to use the cold cap.  I did and pleased I did.

The anti sickness tablet made me constipated.  The hospital provided me  with medication to help with this. A discussion with a BCN may help as hospitals do vary. A discussion about a PIC line is also worth discussing.

    All the best
