Hi I’m diagnosed invasive lobular cancer, triple negative. Had two

surgeries for wide margin and some lymph node clearance. Age 76

Would like gene test, been told too old, my daughter diagnosed last August with BC er positive, she hasn’t been offered although they know of family link, I worry for my grandkids.

  • My sister was told she was too old but fought for gene testing.  My older sister had died of ovarian cancer.  She found she had the BRACA 2 gene as have I.  I am so pleased she insisted on the gene test.  Keep pushing and pushing!!!

  • Could your daughter ask? I recently had one as my sister had breast cancer,  as did an aunt and a great aunt.  My very elderly uncle also had prostate cancer.  I have two daughters in their 20's so was referred. It takes a couple of months,  but my results were negative for all the main culprits. It depends how much history you have,  as I think that the test is quite expensive,  and I had to do the blood test through the genetic clinic at Great  Ormond Street hospital. I'm 62.

  • Thank you for your reply, it’s sensible really isn’t it to test especially my daughter

  • I think it’s ageist not to offer the test. In Leeds where I am it is not offered over 60. At 59 I was offered it and found out that I am a carrier of the PALB2 mutation. It has significant implications for me and my family - but also knowledge is power and it gives us potential protective options.

I agree with above comment - keep pushing! They will say its a ‘resource issue’ but its poor when it has such a potential impact on your life and future young lives.

Very interesting! I told my daughter and nieces to refer to their GP when I got BC as my grandmother has BC years ago.  All their GPs not very interested but MAY have logged this in notes.. never thought about gene testing but will look into this to protect their futures.  Bless you all, it’s a tough gig! • Just had some news re gene testing looks like they

maybe taking my request further as been invited to discuss family tree etc

Best wishes to you..I really hope it stops with you xxx

    1. Hello Millsey - my mother was 75 when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and she had gene testing done without hesitation. Reason was  predominantly the chemo regimen and treatment options that works best for brac2 gene. And it worked favourably as well. I too had breast cancer (diagnosed late last year) and am on chemo now with carboplatin (and Paclitaxol) because I also carry brac2 gene. Platinum based chemo works best for brac gene mutation. I would suggest asking about your treatment options if you and your daughter are more aware of any possible gene mutations. My best wishes to you x
