I have been undergoing chemotherapy to shrink my breast tumour. After 4 sessions of EC my heart rate suddenly increased. The resting rate whilst lying down in bed is still pretty much normal (somewhere between 60 and 70) but as soon as I get up it races up to around 100. Climbing the stairs can take it even higher as can anything other than very minor exertion. Strangely if I start walking it increases immediately but then settles down. Although it is still going faster than I like it never seems to go faster than what I guess is around 120 beats a minute. I do get breathless and have to stop a good few times if going uphill though I never get to the gasping state. Resting heart rate through the day seems around 80 which is high for me although I know it is within normal parameters.
The oncology unit at the hospital has done lots of tests and can't find anything wrong with my heart. The echocardiogram results were fine, the ECG showed some minor changes from pre chemo but nothing significant and I am not suffering from any blood clots. I have no chest pain.
Has anyone else has similar symptoms and did you get any answers? I am still quite worried about the heart rate despite all the tests.
Anxiousjan
Hi Anxiousjan I had exactly the same thing. I had 4 EC then 4 Paclitaxol and had it with both drugs. I’m now 2 weeks post last chemo and my HR still increases with no reason and no warning but I was always assured it was quite normal! I’m hoping as I slowly get my fitness back my HR will reduce and go back to something more reasonable! So basically don’t worry, it’s quite common and perfectly normal! Good luck with the rest of your treatment! X
Yes I did during chemo and got breathless - had a scan - put down to bring just a side effect. Post chemo it’s also remained a bit higher too
I had this. For me, it was heart damage caused by the EC. I started with Atrial Fibrillation - where the rate just wouldn't stay still, jumped up/ went down - which i actually think were the steroids. That got worse after the EC, because you need more steroids with Docataxel.
I felt terrible, my heart rate was bonkers high - 152 one morning. The oncologist was quite dismissive. She did a MUGA scan which showed a drop in heart function, but was still technically good enough for her. Had another chemo and ended up in the hospital. Saw a cardiologist, who was clear that there was heart damage and inflammation. I had to stop the chemo.SInce then have had a few holter scans, MUGA's to track the damage and started on a beta-blocker.
The one positive is that since this was all caused by chemo it did calm down and get better when i had a 4 month break for surgery (I ended up having several). Now I'm on Kadcyla chemo and the Herceptin in that is making heart stuff flare up again.
Oh mu gosh! Hiw scary! The poison has so much to answer for. Really hope you get through the rest of the treatment quickly and either little/no more issues! Best wishes xxx
My heart rate is always high too when I have it checked at hospital. Every time I end up having ECG and chest x-ray which shows nothing
I have had ECG, echocardiogram, blood tests, chest x ray and CT scan all of which showed nothing at all. I came off EC at the end of February and have been on paclitaxel weekly since then. I think I have had less problem with the heart rate on this. It still speeds up more than I would like when I move around but it seems to settle to a more acceptable resting heart rate faster than it was doing. Occasionally the resting rate goes back to my pre chemo 60 beats a minute. Mostly it is around 70 whereas it was frequently 80 or more on EC.. The taxel however has landed me with peripheral neuropathy in my fingers and toes. Hoping the nerve endings will recover in due course. You just can't win with chemo! Still it is my last one next week. Hurray!
I've had high heart rate and breathlessness during chemo. Every time I end up at day unit on red card emergency they worry and I have a chest x-ray which is always clear. I'm not too worried as it is constant
